Fauquier County Schools Giving Parents Control Over What Their Kids Read

A new policy in Fauquier County, Virginia, intends to keep books on school library shelves while giving parents control over what their children read. All Virginia school districts are required to notify parents of sexually explicit content in any class instructional materials and give them a chance to seek an alternate lesson, but the same law does not apply to school library books.

Daniel named Mathews superintendent - Gazette Journal

Mathews County Public Schools has a new superintendent. Dr. David S. Daniel, a longtime educator in Gloucester County who has been with West Point Public Schools since 2011, was appointed Tuesday night to succeed Nancy Welch in the division's top job. His contract will begin July 1.

Norfolk School Board adopts expanded sex-ed curriculum; public speakers largely oppose decision

NORFOLK - The Norfolk School Board approved the adoption of a new sex-education curriculum on Wednesday night, after several speakers called on the group to reject it. The vote was 6-1 - Rodney Jordan, who had previously said he was "squeamish" about the curriculum, was the only dissenting vote.

Richmond Schools to double new teacher bonuses at 'hard to fill' schools

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) - Richmond Public Schools are taking a big step when it comes to finding new teachers for the upcoming school year. The Richmond School Board recently approved new hiring incentives in an effort to address a shortage in school staff across the city.

Anonymous email targets Black cheer coach at Fairfax high school

Faith Dabrio picked up the phone. On the other end was the mother of an athlete she had coached on the Oakton High School cheer team in the fall. She wanted to inform Dabrio of an anonymous email that was circulating in the cheer community at the Northern Virginia school and offer her support.

Sheriff's deputies assigned as full-time school resource officers at all Goochland County Public Schools

GOOCHLAND, Va. (WRIC) - In an effort to increase school safety, School Resource Officers (SROs) have been assigned to full-time positions at all Goochland County Public Schools. While SROs had previously been assigned within the school district, an SRO or other deputy had rotated between the campuses for some schools.

How a Loudoun Co. school helps seniors prep for life after high school - WTOP News

A few years ago, Douglas Fulton, who was principal of Freedom High School in Loudoun County, Virginia, at the time, was concerned about some senior students who seemingly didn't have a plan for life after graduation.
