Students making strides in WPS pilot classroom for 3 year olds

WINCHESTER - Eighteen children are in Winchester Public Schools' first prekindergarten classroom for 3 year olds. The pilot program is being funded for the 2022-23 school year by the Virginia Preschool Initiative and the John & Janice Wyatt Foundation (J2W Foundation).

Coaching concerns spur new measures in Clarke County schools

BERRYVILLE - Allegations that a coach mistreated female soccer players have prompted Clarke County Public Schools to implement measures intended to ensure all student athletes are treated respectfully. An online complaint system and a Student Athlete Leadership Council are now established.

Students evacuated after fire at Hurley High School

HURLEY, Va. (WDBJ) - Hurley High School students were evacuated Tuesday after a fire on the grounds, according to Angie Ward McClanahan of the North Grundy School Board. All students were deemed safe and were sent to the middle school. Parents were allowed to pick up the students or await bus trips that were scheduled for regular times and routes.

SCPS superintendent: Schools already working on improving student scores

Even before the school accreditation ratings for the 2022-2023 school year were released, Shenandoah County Public Schools were working on areas that needed improvement, the school superintendent said. All SCPS schools were accredited for this school year, but Peter Muhlenberg Middle School was "Accredited with Conditions," according to data released last month from the Virginia Department of Education.

Richmond School Board rejects Youngkin's transgender policies

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) - Richmond Public Schools formally rejected Gov. Glenn Youngkin's proposed transgender policies at a school board meeting Monday night. Board member Liz Doerr presented a resolution saying that the policies proposed by Youngkin's administration did not align with the mission of Richmond Public Schools (RPS).

Citing inevitable tax increase to residents, supervisors deny extra money for high school project

"No" was the Halifax County Board of Supervisors' answer to the Halifax County School Board's request for additional funding to build a new high school. The supervisors made the decision in a split 5-3 vote at their Monday evening meeting, voting in favor of the recommendation from the county's finance committee to deny the funding request.

BRISTOL, Va. - City schools generated a mix of academic performance results for the 2021-22 year, but school officials Monday said they are focused on continued improvements in the year ahead. The city School Board received a breakdown of the past year during its regular meeting, including details of the evolving plan to improve performance on standardized testing.
