JLARC says colleges, school divisions could cover dual enrollment costs

All community colleges in Virginia and most K-12 school divisions have enough state and local funding to cover expenses for college courses offered to high school students, also known as dual enrollment courses. Though colleges and school divisions are able to cover the cost, about 42% of school divisions charge their students tuition to take these courses, according to a new study released on Monday.

FCPS approves new courses in criminal justice, emergency medical telecommunications

Frederick County Public Schools will unveil a course in criminal justice next year and a course in emergency medical telecommunications the following year to expand academic opportunities for students. The two classes will be taught at the Dowell J. Howard Career and Technical Education Center at 156 Dowell J Circle.

WINCHESTER - The city School Board voted Monday night to approve a 2% pay increase for all school employees plus extra salary boosts for select support personnel.

Richmond teachers union votes to approve contract

Richmond Public Schools' teachers union voted on Monday evening to approve a tentative contract that lays out raises and stipends that were negotiated between the union and school district administration. Last December, RPS staff became the first public schools employees in Virginia to gain collective bargaining rights since the Virginia Supreme Court banned local government workers from unionizing in 1977.

Virginia underfunds English language learners compared to other states

A new report from the national policy group Education Trust shows that Virginia public school districts serving the highest number of English language learners receive 48% less state revenue per student than those districts serving the fewest ELL students. That puts Virginia at the bottom of the list in this category, compared to all other states.

HCPS City School Board Members Sworn In

With their family and friends present and sitting in the jury box in courtroom A in the Harrisonburg Circuit Court, Emma Phillips, Andy Kohen and Kristen Loflin were sworn in as School Board members. Repeating after circuit court Clerk Chaz Haywood, Phillips, Loflin and Kohen promised to uphold the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
