7th-graders charged after active shooter prank in Henrico

HENRICO, Va. (WWBT) - Two seventh-grade students - a boy and a girl - were charged with falsely summoning law enforcement after an active shooter prank at Holman Middle School on Tuesday. Police say around 3 p.m. April 18 - about 15 minutes before dismissal time - there was an internal communication in the school for an active shooter.

Shenandoah County adopts budget after amendment for school budget

SHENANDOAH COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) - After weeks of heated discussion on where funds should go, the Shenandoah County Board of Supervisors approved its budget and tax rates Tuesday afternoon. After a missed step balance increase in the Shenandoah County School's budget, changes had to be made at Tuesday's meeting before voting on the budget.

Virginia Board of Ed compromises on final K-12 history standards

Virginia's Board of Education reached a compromise Thursday and unanimously approved a final version of the state's K-12 history standards, ending a monthslong controversy that ensued after Gov. Glenn Youngkin's administration unexpectedly rewrote the history standards document. "There's no reason that this had become as controversial as it became," said Board President Dan Gecker on Thursday.

Virginia public high school athletes on verge of profiting from NIL deals

The Virginia High School League is moving toward allowing high school athletes to profit from their name, image and likeness. In January, the league's executive committee recommended a proposal by a vote of 31-0 to permit athletes to earn money through things like autographs and personal appearances among other items. The proposal goes to a second vote when the executive committee meets again May 3.

An additional layer of security will soon be implemented at Prince William County, Virginia, middle and high schools. The county's school board is moving ahead with plans to equip schools with security screeners. The county will begin rolling out the security screeners to schools in August.
