VIRGINIA BEACH - The Virginia Beach school division is seeking input on new designs for Princess Anne High School, Bayside High School, Bayside Sixth Grade Campus and Bettie F. Williams Elementary. These projects fall under the recently approved interim agreement to replace these schools, which are among the oldest in the division.

After a missed step balance increase in the Shenandoah County School's budget, changes had to be made at Tuesday's meeting before voting on the budget.

Virginia's Board of Education reached a compromise Thursday and unanimously approved a final version of the state's K-12 history standards, ending a monthslong controversy that ensued after Gov. Glenn Youngkin's administration unexpectedly rewrote the history standards document. "There's no reason that this had become as controversial as it became," said Board President Dan Gecker on Thursday.

NORFOLK - The Norfolk School Board said more time is needed to determine how the school system will move forward with a study that would guide future planning for Booker T. Washington High School after the board chair said a vote would happen Wednesday.

The Virginia High School League is moving toward allowing high school athletes to profit from their name, image and likeness. In January, the league's executive committee recommended a proposal by a vote of 31-0 to permit athletes to earn money through things like autographs and personal appearances among other items. The proposal goes to a second vote when the executive committee meets again May 3.

BERRYVILLE - Solana Smith wants to work in veterinary medicine because she loves animals, especially cats, dogs and rabbits. "I think it would be a really fulfilling career for me," said Smith, a Clarke County High School (CCHS) junior who's taking an introductory veterinary science course.

An additional layer of security will soon be implemented at Prince William County, Virginia, middle and high schools. The county's school board is moving ahead with plans to equip schools with security screeners. The county will begin rolling out the security screeners to schools in August.
