Louisa County students mixing math with hands-on robotics

LOUISA COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - Students at Louisa County Middle School are using robots to help put a different spin on education. "Sitting and doing a worksheet is important at times, but it's not as much fun as actual hands-on learning," Rachel Green said Friday, February 10. Green is a sixth grade teacher.

Following setbacks, Loudoun Co. schools begin search for new superintendent

Loudoun County Public Schools has selected a recruiting firm to start the process of hiring a new superintendent, who the Virginia-school system hopes to have ready for the 2023-2024 school year. Loudoun's school board will be seeking feedback from staff, parents and community leaders.

We're learning more about the search for a new Newport News Superintendent. The School Board fired Superintendent Dr. George Parker two weeks ago. School Board Chair Lisa Surles-Law said they want to make sure the community is part of the process, but isn't sure yet what form that might take.

New Clarke schools policy targets substance use in extracurricular activities

BERRYVILLE - A policy recently adopted by the Clarke County School Board outlines repercussions for students in extracurricular activities who use illegal drugs, alcohol or tobacco/vaping products. The policy states that it's intended to protect students' physical and mental well-being by banning substances that could negatively affect them.

Proposed policy revisions would limit ability of parents, businesses to donate snacks to Spotsy schools

The Spotsylvania School Board on Monday will consider proposed changes to the division's policy concerning public gifts to schools that would limit the ability of individuals and businesses to donate prepackaged snacks and other food items to schools.

PCPS budget comes up short; VDOE calculation error could cost school system $183K

Patrick County Public Schools (PCPS) Superintendent gave an update on the FY22-23 budget to the PCPS board at the regular February board meeting. A calculation error occurred when the Grocery Tax Hold Harmless addition was not removed from state and local basic aid.

Albemarle teachers make second bid for collective bargaining

The union representing Albemarle County teachers and school staff has submitted a second resolution for collective bargaining rights, nine months after the school board denied its first bid. The Albemarle Education Association presented the resolution at a county school board meeting Thursday night. Roughly 1,300 employees at Albemarle schools have now signed union authorization cards.

Prince William Education Association sweeps union election for school workers

The Prince William Education Association won both bids to represent the county's more than 11,500 non-administrative school employees in a new collective bargaining. The union was successful in both of its elections; securing exclusive bargaining rights for the school division's teachers, nurses, counselors, librarians and other state-licensed employees, as well as its classified employees.

Amherst schools' opt-in policy draws more backlash

The majority of a dozen speakers who addressed the Amherst County School Board Thursday asked the board to reverse a recently adopted opt-in policy for sexually explicit materials in schools. The opt-in policy was an additional measure apart from a model policy a committee appointed by the board recommended.
