Students in Caroline County Public Schools will receive immersive environmental education experiences this fall thanks to a grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Lenka Mendoza does not typically make the trek to the Kelly Leadership Center for Prince William County School Board meetings. But she and other parents from Freedom High School were there Wednesday night, several with division-provided translators in tow, to tell the school system's leadership that they clearly were not being heard.

Today, USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service launched the first phase of its $100 million Healthy Meals Incentives Initiative aimed at improving the nutritional quality of school meals by opening a request for applications for an organization to manage grants to small and/or rural school meal programs, establish an awards program to recognize school districts that are excelling in their meal quality, and support schools in bringing best practices into their lunchrooms.

VIRGINIA BEACH - More than a dozen candidates are seeking a seat on the Virginia Beach School Board. The school system is one of the largest in the commonwealth and has a budget of more than $1 billion, which the board manages.

Four out of 24 schools in Albemarle County Public Schools were accredited with conditions on Thursday, according to school officials. Greer, Mountain View, Red Hill, and Woodbrook elementary schools had one student demographic group that did not pass state Standard of Learning exams, according to officials.

There was a problem with the chicken nuggets. The breaded hunks of chicken, served to 4,000-plus students at Petersburg City Public Schools, met the federal government's standards for calories, saturated fat and sodium. But they had no taste, and the kids were losing interest.

Ninety-five percent of Fredericksburg-area public schools are fully accredited this year, according to ratings released Thursday by the Virginia Department of Education. Four area schools are accredited with conditions: Walker-Grant Middle in Fredericksburg; Bowling Green Elementary and Caroline Middle in Caroline County; and Post Oak Middle in Spotsylvania County.

In Fairfax, a gender-nonconforming teen who is out at school, but not at home, is terrified their parents will discover the truth under Virginia's new policies for transgender students. If they find out, the teen is sure, they will refuse to pay for college - and may kick the teen out of their home.

ROANOKE, Va. - It's the first time we've had accreditation numbers from the Virginia Department of Education since before the pandemic. Eighty-nine percent of schools earned full accreditation. That's three percent lower than 2019-2020. 121 Virginia schools that are below state standard had problems with chronic absenteeism, compared with 23 schools before the pandemic.
