CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) - Chesterfield County Public Schools (CCPS) honored students who successfully secured full-time employment through their high school program of study as part of the annual Career Signing Day. The event took place from 8 to 10 a.m.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - The Louisa County Public Schools office building will soon be even more green. More than half of the building will be powered by solar panels, and the project is being installed by students. The students in Louisa County High School's "Energy and Power" class are the engineers behind the project.

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - Graduation season is approaching. For Bethel High School senior Saleh Longchamp, it's been a stressful few months. She's excelled in school, earning a spot in the top 10% of her class. She also spends hours volunteering and staying involved at Bethel High School.

On Friday, high school students from Campbell, Amherst, Bedford, and Appomattox counties competed in the Central Virginia Welding Wars hosted by CVCC. The event was free to compete in with ranging skill levels. Principal of Campbell County Technical Center, Jon Hardie, speaks about the high school portion of the event saying "employers have the opportunity to see high school students competing and performing".

A Lynchburg City Councilor is calling on the city's school division to cancel future performances of what he deems to be a controversial play at one of the city's high schools, threatening the superintendent's job if the school board does not scrap the play.

The VSBA Spring Regional Art Contest leaderboard contained three talented Rockingham County students' work this month. Raleigh Bennetch, 5th grade, of Peak View Elementary took third place in the Elementary School Category, Diana Zudilin, 8th grade, of Montevideo Middle School won first place in the Middle School category, and Zoe Earl, 12th grade, of Broadway High School took first place in the High School Contest.

Many Halifax County High School juniors and seniors will get behind the wheel of a car late Saturday night and drive home from the prom. Students went through a course at the high school Wednesday morning simulating the feeling of driving while impaired.

Sarah Ritchie, a counselor at King George Elementary School, has been named Elementary School Counselor of the Year for 2023 by the Virginia School Counselor Association. The annual award recognizes both an elementary and secondary school counselor who has "made a positive impact in their school community," according to a press release from VSCA.

Virginia parents' fears about gun violence in schools, already top of mind, have been intensified by two school shootings in the commonwealth this year - one at Newport News in January and one on Thursday in the parking lot of George Wythe High School in Richmond.
