University of Mary Washington grad students help fill teacher shortage

This spring, graduate students in the University of Mary Washington's College of Education are gaining valuable teaching experience heading up their own classrooms, in addition to filling vacant teaching positions at area schools. Twenty UMW students are receiving paychecks for taking full-time positions in Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania and Stafford public schools through a pilot apprenticeship program launched last year to assist schools dealing with teacher shortages.

Tebow bill, which lets homeschooled kids play high school sports, is defeated again

A bill that would allow homeschooled students to play high school sports - nicknamed the "Tebow Bill" - has arisen frequently in the General Assembly throughout the past decade. But each year, the Republican-favored bill has been defeated by Democrats. Thursday was no different. A Democratic-controlled Senate committee defeated the Tebow Bill on an 8-7 vote.

Hampton City Schools refute claims of handling of sexual assault incident

According to school officials, students across four high schools walked out to protest claims of repeated acts of sexual assault between two elementary-age students. HAMPTON, Va. - Officials with Hampton City Schools confirmed students across four high schools participated in walkout demonstrations Monday morning.

Alexandria Public Schools announce college program

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WDVM) - Alexandria City Public Schools is partnering with Virginia universities to provide stem opportunities for students of color. Superintendent Gregory Hutchings made the announcement at the State of the School's address on Tuesday. Alexandria schools will work with George Mason University and Virginia Tech.

Virginia's schools are crumbling. How did the state get here?

Around the state, Virginia students are attending class in buildings with leaking roofs, crumbling walls, and outdated HVAC units. It's a problem state lawmakers know about, but can't seem to agree on how to fix. Recordings of Frederick County School Board meetings will be available soon

WINCHESTER - Recordings of Frederick County School Board meetings will soon be available to the public. On Tuesday, the School Board voted unanimously to hire vendor Rev.com to provide closed captioning for recordings of board meetings. Currently, meetings are livestreamed on YouTube, but recordings are not available for viewing afterward.

The Elko Middle School Technology Association is seeking contributions to help fund its participation in the TSA Technosphere competition, a four-day statewide STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) event that will take place next month in Hampton. It would be Elko's first time participating in more than six years.
