Northern Virginia spellers advance in Scripps National Spelling Bee

All five Northern Virginia spellers competing in this week's Scripps National Spelling Bee advanced to the third round Tuesday. The spellers, including one of the youngest in the bee, 9-year-old Siya Sampath of Prince William County, were among 139 of the 231 competitors to advance through both of Tuesday's early rounds.

Chesapeake teacher named Virginia Computer Science Teacher of the Year

CHESAPEAKE, Va. - A teacher from Chesapeake is being honored with a state award. Caren Daniel, from Hugo Owens Middle School, has been named Virginia's Computer Science Teacher of the Year. The honor is given out every year by the Virginia Department of Education.

Board ponders new communication device policy | Carroll News

The Carroll County Board of Education was updated at its May 9 regular meeting on work to craft a potential, new Electronic Communication Devices policy for the school division. Virtual reality brings real-life lessons in distracted driving to Virginia Beach teens

Sophomores at three Virginia Beach high schools got an important lesson outside of the traditional classroom. Unlike a typical school day, the curriculum's goal was to make sure the students were distracted. Teens were schooled on the dangers of distracted driving by spending time in a virtual reality-distracted and drunk driving simulator.

Chesterfield teacher wins grand prize in Virginia Lottery's 'Thank a Teacher' contest

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) - A lucky Midlothian teacher got a special surprise from the Virginia Lottery on her last day before retirement - a complimentary vacation and a big prize for her school. Judge orders Loudoun schools turn over investigation into sexual assaults, rape

A Loudoun County judge is ordering the school system to make public its internal investigation into two sexual assaults and a rape that occurred on school grounds. The ruling is a win for Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares, who has been fighting to expose how he says the school district mishandled the incidents.
