Virginia schools, first responders partner to support students exposed to trauma

Staff at a Virginia elementary school last month were considering giving an out-of-school suspension to a child who was uncharacteristically misbehaving during school and fighting with others. Midway through the day, staff received a " Handle with Care" notice from local law enforcement.

Fort Defiance High School honors Valley veterans

FORT DEFIANCE, Va. (WHSV) - Fort Defiance High School's FFA and FFCLA hosted a special program to honor the brave men and women who have fought to defend this country. Dr. Rob Marsh, an United States Army veteran, addressed the students, giving them insight on what a veteran is, why they should be celebrated, and how they can be the next generation of patriots.

Hopewell High student caught trying to sneak gun into school Friday morning

HOPEWELL - Police say a Hopewell High School students attempted to smuggle a gun into school Friday morning. Police Lt. Jacquita Allen said in an email that the student "was quickly apprehended" shortly after 10 a.m., and there was no active threat to school safety.

Lawsuit against Fairfax County Public Schools moves forward

In a minor setback for Fairfax County Public Schools, U.S. Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar filed a brief opposing the school system's request for the U.S. Supreme Court to take up a discrimination lawsuit against the school division.

Schools dismiss after sheltering during tornado warnings; runners go into tunnel at Richmond Raceway

HANOVER COUNTY, Va. -- Dismissal for elementary schools in Hanover County were on about a 35-45 minute delay due after students were forced to shelter in place after multiple tornado warnings were issued across Central Virginia Friday afternoon. Other districts like Henrico and Chesterfield also had dismissal delays as the districts sheltered in place until a 3:15 p.m.

Central Virginia schools receive over $2.4 million in security equipment grants

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Central Virginia schools are receiving $2.48 million to fund in-state School Security Equipment Grants to protect students, faculty and visitors. The grants will pay for voice and video internal communication systems, mass notification systems, security card access systems, visitor ID badging systems, surveillance cameras, two-way radios, security vestibules, interior school bus cameras, two-way radios for buses and other security enhancements.

Stafford School Board discusses classroom décor policy

The Stafford County School Board on Tuesday discussed proposed revisions to the employee code of conduct that outline parameters for classroom décor. "Décor considered controversial is prohibited from being displayed in a compulsory classroom setting," the proposed revisions state.

Police: Hopewell High School student caught with loaded gun in backpack

A Hopewell High School student was taken into custody Friday morning after police said a loaded firearm was discovered in the student's backpack. The suspect's name was withheld because the student is underage. Police also declined to disclose the student's age and gender. Officers responded about 10:08 a.m.
