Staff at a Virginia elementary school last month were considering giving an out-of-school suspension to a child who was uncharacteristically misbehaving during school and fighting with others. Midway through the day, staff received a " Handle with Care" notice from local law enforcement.

HOPEWELL - Police say a Hopewell High School students attempted to smuggle a gun into school Friday morning. Police Lt. Jacquita Allen said in an email that the student "was quickly apprehended" shortly after 10 a.m., and there was no active threat to school safety.

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Central Virginia schools are receiving $2.48 million to fund in-state School Security Equipment Grants to protect students, faculty and visitors. The grants will pay for voice and video internal communication systems, mass notification systems, security card access systems, visitor ID badging systems, surveillance cameras, two-way radios, security vestibules, interior school bus cameras, two-way radios for buses and other security enhancements.

The Stafford County School Board on Tuesday discussed proposed revisions to the employee code of conduct that outline parameters for classroom décor. "Décor considered controversial is prohibited from being displayed in a compulsory classroom setting," the proposed revisions state.

A Hopewell High School student was taken into custody Friday morning after police said a loaded firearm was discovered in the student's backpack. The suspect's name was withheld because the student is underage. Police also declined to disclose the student's age and gender. Officers responded about 10:08 a.m.
