Show Up Amherst initiative gains momentum in county's schools

A simple act made highly problematic the past few years of the COVID-19 pandemic is gaining much attention in the Amherst County Public Schools community this school year. ACPS has partnered with the Amherst County Public Schools Education Foundation and IRON Lives, two nonprofit organizations that support the school division, to engage in a community-building initiative called #ShowUpAmherst.

Substitute teacher at Leesburg high school charged with assaulting student

Leesburg police have charged a substitute teacher with misdemeanor assault and battery on a student at Tuscarora High School. The charge against Hans Mirzaei, 68, of Leesburg, stems from an incident that occurred Sept. 16 about 2 p.m. at Tuscarora High School, Leesburg police said in a news release.

Fulks Run Elementary School students spearhead trail project

FULKS RUN, Va. (WHSV) - Some third-graders at Fulks Run Elementary School are working to make a difference in their school and community. Building a walking and biking trail at the school started as just an idea from one student, but quickly turned into a class-wide initiative to make that idea become reality.

Judge says parents' lawsuit against LCPS overly broad

Attorneys representing 11 parents suing Loudoun County Public Schools and the school board alleging school district policies are "racist" and overly liberal have to go back to the drawing board. In a Sept. 22 opinion, Judge Douglas L. Fleming Jr., sided with an attorney for the school district and the school board who said the the lawsuit lacks specifics.

Wise County gets grant to provide satellite broadband

A $232,500 grant from the Virginia Coalfield Economic Development Authority (VCEDA) Education and Telehealth Access Fund will be used to finance the provision of broadband internet service through Starlink satellite service to unserved or underserved households with school children in Wise County.

Halifax County Board of Supervisors to mull school money request

An additional $16.5 million to build a new Halifax County High School is up for discussion Monday evening at the Halifax County Board of Supervisors meeting. The meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. Monday in the second-floor public meeting room of the Mary Bethune Office Complex.

Mental health support bill for students, co-sponsored by Congressman Bobby Scott, passes House

A bill aiming to strengthen mental health support for students, co-sponsored by Congressman Bobby Scott, narrowly passed the House of Representatives on Thursday. James J. Fedderman, president of the Virginia Education Association, said the legislation comes at a crucial time. The VEA is a union of more than 40,000 teachers and school support professionals.

Solar Farm Pitched Near Broadway High Would Power School

Broadway High School's Gobbler green may take on whole new meaning under an Alabama-based company's plans to place a solar power array on 4.62 acres adjacent to the school. All energy generated would go to Broadway High School, said Cody Doores, a consultant with EnPower Solutions LLC.

Fairfax Co. special education students disproportionately suspended, review finds - WTOP News

Students with disabilities in Virginia's largest school system are disproportionately suspended compared to their peers without disabilities, according to the findings of a two-year review of Fairfax County Public Schools' special education program. The Fairfax County School Board will be briefed Tuesday on findings of a review of special education services that it requested in December 2019.
