Fredericksburg schools' Super Cat bus is ready to hit the streets

One evening during the height of the pandemic, when schools were closed, Fredericksburg City Public Schools superintendent Marci Catlett was sitting at home when a school bus pulled up in her street. School division staff members piled out "like a SWAT team," Catlett said, to distribute packets of assignments, activities, supplies and small gifts to the students who lived on her street.

Yorktown, VB schools named 2022 National Blue Ribbon Schools

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Two local schools have been named National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2022. Yorktown's Tabb Elementary and Virginia Beach's Old Donation School were among the 297 nationwide designated with the honor on Friday by U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona.

More parcels purchased for Woodbridge school

Prince William County Schools has agreed to purchase three more parcels needed to build its next Woodbridge elementary school by 2024. The School Board earlier this month approved the agreement to buy three parcels totaling 4.89 acres for $3.5 million from Marumsco Neighborhoods, LLC.

Isle of Wight County Schools has removed a link to seeker.com from Smithfield Middle School's website after a parent objected to its age-appropriateness for children.

Southwest Virginia educators suggest room for improvement with state's standardized tests

Even for a school division with high Standards of Learning pass rates, officials in Botetourt County and educators elsewhere in Southwest Virginia are giving low marks to standardized tests that weigh heavily for public education. Students in Botetourt County scored fourth in Virginia on their math Standards of Learning exams in spring 2022, according to pass rates reported during a school board meeting last week.

Youngkin administration rolls back protections for transgender students

Gov. Glenn Youngkin's administration undid the Virginia Department of Education's policy to protect transgender students all at once on Friday. It rewrote model policies that strengthened transgender students' rights in order to emphasize parents' rights.

Lynchburg students explore careers before graduation with new internship program

Lately, Heritage High School senior Micah Thomas has been contemplating what he wants to pursue after graduation. Before the end of his junior year, he applied for a newly launched internship program run by Beacon of Hope, a nonprofit which works with Lynchburg City Schools to ensure each student attains secondary education.

Franklin County school threat traced to northern Virginia

FERANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) - The Franklin County Sheriff's Office has identified the origin of a threat aimed at Benjamin Franklin Middle School Thursday. The written threat, posted on Snapchat, came from a juvenile in northern Virginia, where law enforcement is investigating, according to Franklin County.

Nuckols Farm Elementary makes Henrico Schools history

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -Nuckols Farm Elementary School has been Henrico County Schools history. The Short Pump school was named a 2022 Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education on Friday. It's the second time in school history that Nuckols Farm has earned that honor making it the only two-time winner in Henrico history.

Norfolk residents can weigh in on future of Booker T. Washington, Maury high schools during community meetings

NORFOLK - Norfolk residents can provide input on the futures of Booker T. Washington High School and Maury High School this fall. The Norfolk School Board received information on four possible plans to either renovate or demolish and rebuild Maury High School, which is more than a century old, in August.
