CHRISTIANSBURG - Montgomery County Public Schools officials are looking to make more progress soon on the talks about district employees and unionizing. The county school board is slated to have a closed meeting with an attorney to discuss a resolution on collective bargaining during the week of Oct. 10.

Brittany Shuler, of Marion, honors her daughter Marissa's memory by promoting recognition of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September. Shuler, who works in intervention at Marion Elementary School, came to the August meeting of Smyth County School Board to share her message and encourage the schools to recognize the awareness month.

BEDFORD - A new approach to addressing student behavioral and mental health needs is meeting with success in Bedford County Public Schools. Bedford County schools implemented the intervention design specialist - IDS - model in 2019. The adoption of this model was part of a strategic planning vision spearheaded by Beth Robertson, director of student support services.

A tree fell on a Newport News bus Friday as stormy weather moved through the region. Bus 329 was about to drop off its last student of the afternoon bus route when the tree collapsed in the wind, confirmed Michelle Price, spokesperson for the Newport News School Division. No injuries were reported.
