U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona spent the afternoon in Hampton on Monday, speaking with high school and college students and education leaders. Cardona visited Bethel High School and Hampton University with U.S. Rep. Bobby Scott and spoke about the importance of creating college and career pathways for students.

Prince William County Schools will move forward with plans for a four-bell school start schedule for elementary schools, in a move that school officials say will help the school system overcome a bus driver shortage.

Elected officials, alongside city and school division staff, celebrated the groundbreaking of the new Fredericksburg middle school at 2201 Idlewild Blvd. on Friday morning. As construction vehicles passed busily back and forth over the 26-acre expanse of dirt that will eventually be the home of the 160,000-square-foot school, officials praised the cooperation and community input that led to the groundbreaking.

Heads-up, motorists.Suffolk is rolling out an array of automated cameras that will help enforce traffic laws. Devices will be placed at nine intersections to catch those running red lights, on school bus crossing arms to catch drivers who don't stop when required, and at work and school zones to catch those who drive over the speed limit, the city said a news release.

Rockingham County Public Schools has received national recognition for its Strong Starts behavioral health program. RCPS has been named a system to watch by the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), meaning it has been marked as a model for other school divisions around the U.S. to follow.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - The Chesapeake School Board voted to move forward with new policies and regulations that allow the possibility for armed school security officers or SSOs. "The decision that was made this evening was to really allow school security officers that are our employees to potentially be armed," said Chesapeake Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jared Cotton.
