State grant to help Clarke teachers earn certifications

BERRYVILLE - Clarke County Public Schools will use a $30,000 grant to help certain teachers become certified and fully licensed in the subjects they teach. The Recruitment and Retention Support Grant will be used toward continuing education for provisionally licensed teachers and those needing specific certifications, said county Joint Administrative Services Director Brenda Bennett.

Youngkin announces new tutoring partnership to address learning loss

Gov. Glenn Youngkin on Thursday announced a new tutoring initiative aimed at helping Virginia's children recover from what he called "catastrophic" learning loss. Students from four of Virginia's historically Black colleges and universities, in partnership with the Urban Leagues of Hampton Roads and Greater Richmond, will provide tutoring services to Virginia's K-12 students.

Henrico school bus driver charged after crash sends 2 people to hospital

HENRICO, Va. (WWBT) - A Henrico school bus driver has been charged after a crash sends two people, including a child to the hospital Thursday morning. At around 8:20 a.m., Henrico Police and Fire responded to the intersection of Harvie Road and Reynolds Road for the report of a crash involving a school bus and a minivan.

HOPEWELL, Va. (WWBT) - Classes will resume at Hopewell High School Thursday morning after students were evacuated hours early Wednesday because of what smelled like a possible gas leak. As it turned out, there was no problem. The odor stemmed from a back-up battery system in the server room and proved to be harmless.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Lynnhaven Middle School has suffered the loss of an eighth-grade student. 15-year-old Kingston Silvis lived most of his life with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. It is a disorder of progressive muscular weakness typically found in boys. He was born with it, but it began impacting him when he was five.
