State push for school safety leads to increased police presence

On a chilly December morning in Lynchburg, Kim Simon kicked off a weeklong training for law enforcement officers who were recently hired to work in Virginia schools. Simon is the school resource officer training and program coordinator for the Virginia Center for School and Campus Safety.

Lynchburg City Schools officials are working to get T.C. Miller and R.S. Payne elementary schools back in operation, Deputy Superintendent Reid Wodicka said Tuesday. On Friday, Lynchburg City Schools announced R.S. Payne and T.C. Miller students would attend schools remotely this week due to heating and plumbing problems in the two buildings.

"Fences," a Pulitzer Prize and Tony award-winning play about a Black family dealing with racism and family tension in Pittsburgh in the 1950s, has been seen by thousands of people since it debuted in the 1980's and millions more saw the Oscar-nominated movie version in 2016.

All Chesapeake schools awarded Purple Star for commitment to meeting military families' needs

This month, Chesapeake Public Schools became the first division in Virginia to have all its schools designated as Purple Star schools. "The Purple Star designation is awarded to military-friendly schools that have demonstrated their commitment to meeting the needs of military-connected students and their families," states a press release from the Virginia Department of Education.
