Elementary School in Virginia Gets Ukuleles for Music Therapy Program

A Virginia school used a grant to purchase new ukuleles for a music therapy program for students with special needs. Inside a classroom at Woodlawn Elementary School there are sweet songs and smiles all around. The music therapy program uses harmonies as a way of healing.

Richmond School Board approves plan to fast-track design process for William Fox Elementary renovation

Richmond's School Board voted to expedite the procurement process for the renovation of William Fox Elementary and to use $600,000 to replace parts of the roof of the school students moved into in May after a three-alarm fire closed Fox Elementary.

Dinwiddie teacher wins Virginia Lottery award

CONGRATS! First-grade teacher Courtney Bishop won a $2,500 Virginia-themed vacation and a gift card from the Virginia Lottery and its partners IGT and NeoPollard Interactive. Her school, Midway Elementary School will also receive $2,500 in supplies from The Supply Room.

Lynchburg City Council appointed three people to expiring seats on the Lynchburg City School Board during a special called meeting Tuesday night. Anthony Andrews was appointed to the expiring District 1 seat; Martin Day was appointed to the expiring seat in District 2; and Gloria Preston was appointed to the seat for District 3.

King George tentatively approves 'historic amount' for schools

Each member of the King George Board of Supervisors initially had a different amount in mind, but the board unanimously agreed in the end to appropriate $21.2 million in local funds to schools. That's more than several supervisors had wanted to designate, slightly less than another preferred and fairly close to what School Superintendent Rob Benson suggested in preliminary discussions months ago.

Students charged after gun discovered at Henrico County school

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- Two students have been charged with firearm offenses after a gun was discovered at John Rolfe Middle School. On Monday, school officials at the school were alerted about a gun being on school grounds on Monday morning.

Mathews school employees honored

Mathews County Public Schools awarded pins and plaques for years of service, and recognized retiring teachers and other employees at an end-of-year program last Wednesday at Mathews High School. Retirement plaques were handed out to Joy Drummond (37 years) and Barbara van Emmerik (who also received a pin for 20 years' service).
