Walking lessons for CCS

A crossing guard, a scooter driver and a third-grade pedestrian walk into a gym class... That was the scene at Jackson-Via Elementary School on Wednesday morning, as students took their second walking safety lesson of the new school year. All Charlottesville schools offer the three-lesson safety course to all nine schools for all grade levels.

Jordan Markwood, the fine arts department chair and choral director at Rock Ridge High School in Ashburn, is Virginia's 2023 Region 4 Teacher of the Year.

Hanover School Board passes policy to give board final say over each transgender student's access to bathroom

The Hanover County School Board voted 5-2 to adopt a policy that will require transgender students to submit a written request to school administration asking for access to the schools' facilities that align with the students' gender identities. The school board will have final say in the decision.

Suffolk educator named Teacher of the Year for Region 2

Jason Bartholomew has taught economics and personal finance at Nansemond River High School for 10 years. SUFFOLK, Va. - A big surprise came Jason Bartholomew's way Tuesday morning. Leaders with the Virginia Department of Education named him the Region 2 Teacher of the Year for 2023.

Staunton High School's Lori Peltonen, a library/media specialist and educator for 30 years, is the 2023 Region V Teacher of the Year. Peltonen, according to a press release, served as a middle school teacher for 13 years and a media specialist for 17 years.

On Wednesday, the Richmond Crusade for Voters announced a list of demands for Richmond Public Schools, including an immediate audit of student enrollment and attendance from 2015 to 2022 and an audit of the school board's budget pertaining to the division's strategic plan.

When Fabiana Parker was a girl growing up in Brazil, she taught her grandmother how to read. Parker remembers noticing that her grandmother would use her thumbprint as a signature. "I realized, my grandma can't read or write," Parker said.

Judge: School Board 'recess' didn't violate FOIA; minutes omissions did - Smithfield Times

The Isle of Wight County School Board's calling of a roughly 10-minute "recess" at its March meeting, which a Carrollton woman and her lawyer characterized as an unofficial closed session, didn't violate Virginia's Freedom of Information Act, a judge ruled on Aug. 16. But two omissions from the board's April meeting minutes did.
