Fauquier County Schools Giving Parents Control Over What Their Kids Read

A new policy in Fauquier County, Virginia, intends to keep books on school library shelves while giving parents control over what their children read. All Virginia school districts are required to notify parents of sexually explicit content in any class instructional materials and give them a chance to seek an alternate lesson, but the same law does not apply to school library books.

COVINGTON, Va. (WDBJ) - "It's safe to say they saved the best class for last, Go Cougars." Most people remember the moment they walked across the stage and received their high school diploma. That rang true at Covington High School Friday night, but with consolidation into Alleghany Highlands Public Schools, the CHS Class of 2023 are now the final seniors to graduate.

Orange County schools get $1.6M less than hoped for in new budget

Orange County Public Schools will be receiving approximately $1.6 million less in funding that it had originally hoped for fiscal year 2024, but Superintendent Dr. Daniel Hornick remains optimistic that the district can make the best of a less-than-ideal situation. Maury High option discussed publicly for first time: Turning it into housing and building new school on property

NORFOLK - The Norfolk School Board is moving forward with the process to consider what to do with Maury High School. The board had been considering whether to tear down and rebuild the more than 110-year-old building or renovate it. However, a third option was brought forward late last year and discussed publicly for the first time during Wednesday's meeting.

High schoolers explore careers in STEM with hands-on workshops

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - About 50 young women in high school learned all about STEM careers and the possibilities in the field on Friday. The American Heart Association (AHA) hosted the first ever 'STEM goes Red' event at Virginia Western Community College. Roanoke City Public high schoolers explored jobs in dentistry, medicine and science research.

Leaders are estimating having around 300 instructional vacancies during this upcoming school year, but they're hoping scholarships and leadership programs help. HAMPTON, Va. - Wednesday night, Hampton City Schools presented their steps to find future educators and keep the ones they already have. Teacher shortages are a problem facing just about every school system in the country.

Frederick School Board lowers student fees for FCPS employees

In an effort to shore up staff retention, the Frederick County School Board on Tuesday lowered the annual student tuition rates staff members who live outside of the county pay for family members to attend the division's schools.
