Reading, writing, arithmetic and ... swimming: Hampton second graders get free lessons at the Aquaplex

Launched in January, it's a partnership between the city and the school division and is free to each of the more than 1,300 public-school second graders. "To watch the kids progress from the first lesson to the fifth lesson, it's remarkable."

Russ: Botetourt County schools strategic plan lays groundwork for continued success

Suffolk Public Schools is entering into a new partnership with 21st CentEd to bring an educational program that provides comprehensive education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics - referred to as STEM. Lynchburg City School Board to advocate for revised financial agreement with city council

Two weeks after Lynchburg City Council expressed its desire to revisit a 30-year-old financial agreement between it and the Lynchburg City School Board, the board has decided it will advocate for a revised version of the agreement during council's Feb. 14 meeting.

In this fast-paced, ever-changing world, there are two constants at Jouett Elementary. Mary Robinson began working for Louisa County Public Schools in 1971, a career adding up to 52 years and counting. Priscilla Slaughter started her career in the school system one year before her sister Mary.

New superintendent 'hit the ground running,' presents three-phased 'entry plan'

During Frederick County Public Schools Superintendent George C. Hummer's first meeting last week, he presented his plan on how he will familiarize himself with the division and chart a new course. Hummer said his first week on the job - which included visits to 11 schools - was "absolutely outstanding."

Mathews County School Board members approved a tentative timeline in its search for a new superintendent, as well as a position vacancy announcement, during a special meeting held Tuesday afternoon in the school board office conference room.

Clarke County School Board member doesn't support board's code of conduct

The Clarke County School Board recently implemented a code of conduct without support from one of its members. Russell District board member Andrew MacDonald called the code "a meaningless document" that amounts to "bureaucratic pablum." Adopted in a 4-1 vote, with MacDonald dissenting, the code updates one the board originally adopted in 2014 and revised in 2016.
