Teen beats the odds by graduating from high school

LOUISA COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- One local teenager is beating the odds by graduating high school. Cesar Dulanto III was diagnosed with cerebral palsy shortly after birth and has never been able to walk on his own.
"We found out he had cerebral palsy when he was a year and some months. For us, it was a shock. We were both very young," said his mother, Yaquelin Dulanto.

Lynchburg City Council makes school board interviews available to public | Lynchburg City Council has made interviews with all the candidates for three school board seats available for residents to view. "In an effort [to] increase transparency, City Council has chosen to make School Board interview recordings available before, as opposed to after, appointments to the board are made," according to a news release from the city. | | |
Alexandria High School Student Fatally Stabbed During Fight at Bradlee Shopping Center | A high school student in Alexandria, Virginia, has died after someone stabbed him during a fight involving 30 to 50 people at the Bradlee Shopping Center Tuesday afternoon, police say. Officers found 18-year-old Luis Mejia Hernandez when they arrived to the McDonald's parking lot at the shopping center to break up the fight about 12:30 p.m., police said. | | |
Jack Jouett community celebrates new name

Jack Jouett went down in flames and Journey arose from the ashes.
In July, Jack Jouett Middle School will officially become Journey Middle, but the school community got a head start this week celebrating that transformation.
With a bonfire, paint-by-numbers mural and time capsule, students and the school community marked the end of the Jack Jouett era for the 56-year-old school on Saturday.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia Beach City Public Schools is re-evaluating policies and procedures when it comes to the content children can access in school.
During Tuesday’s Virginia Beach School Board work session, district leaders explained the current book policy and how they keep track of the district’s more than one million books along with using two scholastic vetting systems.
| School Board Removal Petitions Dismissed, Fight for Schools Eyes VA-10 Race |
The effort to remove two School Board members appears to be over following a Circuit Court hearing this morning during which the petitions against Brenda Sheridan (Sterling) and Atoosa Reaser (Algonkian) were dismissed for lack of substance in front of a packed courtroom.
The hearing punctuates a year-long effort to remove School Board members for their involvement in a private Facebook group and support of progressive social policies in schools.

Chesterfield looking to hire public school bus drivers, holding job fair
| CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WRIC) — Chesterfield County Public Schools is in the market for new bus drivers. The county will host a job fair for prospective candidates on Tuesday, May 31, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Manchester Middle School located at 7401 Hull Street Road. The position is full-time with benefits. New school bus drivers will be paid a starting salary of $20.21 an hour, get a $3,000 bonus and receive paid CDL training. No prior experience is required for the job. | |
