Wise County School Board hires Goforth as superintendent | WISE - The Wise County Schools' human resource director takes over as superintendent on Friday. The county school board voted 7-0, with board member Herb Shortt abstaining, to hire Mike Goforth as superintendent effective Friday for a four-year term. Gorforth will replace retiring Superintendent Greg Mullins, who announced plans in May to retire on June 30. | | |
Farm to school movement growing in Roanoke | ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - For students in the RCPS+ summer program, the garden at James Madison Middle school was their classroom Tuesday morning. Lessons included the basics of composting, and the value of fresh fruits and vegetables. Organizations including LEAP, the Local Environmental Agricultural Project, and Virginia Cooperative Extension have been bringing similar lessons to students at several Roanoke schools. | | |
Richmond School Board to again discuss $500,000 facilities assessment plan | The Richmond School Board might reverse its previous decision to reject a comprehensive facilities assessment that would address every building in the division for an approximate cost of $500,000. In April, a motion to approve the assessment contract failed. During the board's June 21 meeting, School Board member Cheryl Burke of the 7th District asked to revisit the facilities assessment. | | |
Sodexo contract approved by Halifax County School Board | The Halifax County School Board approved a new contract with its current food service management company Sodexo Operations at its Monday evening meeting. The contract begins Friday. ED-4 trustee Jay Camp made the motion to approve the one-year contract with Sodexo with up to four one-year renewals and ED-8 trustee Walter Potts seconded the motion. | | | |
Shenandoah County Public Schools needs to hire 36 teachers | Shenandoah County Public Schools has 36 teaching positions to fill. During a Shenandoah County School Board strategic planning session Thursday, the division's Director of Human Resources Linda Hodges said that the number of positions to fill this year is higher than in previous years, but a contributing factor is that SCPS still has 16 other positions to fill from the previous year. | | |
Hanover County Public Schools opens their first 'Tools 4 Teachers' store | HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) - Hanover County Public Schools officially opened their first "Tools 4 Teachers" store, which will provide teachers with free school supplies for their classrooms. The ribbon-cutting ceremony opening the store happened on Saturday, June 25. The store is called The Arc of Hanover, according to HCPS. | | |
