Two Southwest Virginia schools receive Blue Ribbon honors

(WJHL) - Two Southwest Virginia schools received national Blue Ribbon honors, according to a press release on Tuesday. Two wounded in shooting at Heritage High School in Newport News, police say

Two students were wounded in a shooting at Heritage High School in Newport News, Va., Monday morning, an incident police said stemmed from a dispute between youths who know each other. Police said one suspect, a male juvenile, left the school and was taken into custody about three hours after the shooting.

School board continues business despite interruptions

The Greene County School Board held its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 8. Despite a rowdy crowd and lively public comment and discussion from those in attendance (nearly 100 people), the board was able to recognize student and staff member achievements from the past year and hear updates on summer school, professional development, the Sheriff's office memorandum of understanding and the process for the upcoming fiscal year 2023 budget process.

City School Board To Consider Therapy Dog Policy

At a work session today, the Harrisonburg City School Board will discuss a new policy on therapy dogs in schools. According to the proposed policy, a "therapy dog" is a dog that has been individually trained and certified to work with its owner to provide emotional support, well-being, comfort or companionship to school district students.

Henrico Schools' to host eight Fall Bridge Builders Academy family workshops | The Henrico Citizen

Henrico County Public Schools' Fall Bridge Builders Academy workshop series will offer eight sessions detailing resources for students and parents. The virtual and in-person workshops will be held at 6 p.m. on various dates through Nov. 9. Each of the workshops in the series represent one of four "learning strands," or categories, to make it easier to find relevant information.

Stafford County board to vote on denouncing teaching of 1619 Project, critical race theory

The Stafford County Board of Supervisors is scheduled to vote Tuesday on a resolution denouncing the teaching of the 1619 Project and critical race theory in county schools. The resolution threatens to deny funding to the schools for those teachings. The board will also vote on condemning the right of students to choose their own pronouns.

Virginia SAT scores up, but participation plummets in COVID era

While average SAT scores among members of the Class of 2021 in Virginia were up, state education officials - who released the data - were cautious about taking a victory lap. The reason? Average scores were higher, but number of Virginia high-school seniors taking the exam plummeted, due in large part to the pandemic.
