Schools await details on Youngkin's plan to boost dual enrollment

Gov. Glenn Youngkin has repeatedly said that he wants all Virginia high school students to graduate with college-level associate degrees that will prepare them for the workforce. So far, though, he hasn't said how that will be possible or how much it will cost the commonwealth to basically pay for two years' worth of college credits for every student in Virginia.

AHPS School Board extends upcoming holiday break

LOW MOOR, Va. (WDBJ) - Alleghany Highlands Public Schools teachers and students may see an extended holiday break under action taken by the School Board on Tuesday, Dec. 6. The School Board voted to close schools the entire week of December 19.

Lynchburg City Schools capital improvement plan proposes major renovations

Lynchburg City Schools' new proposed five-year capital improvement plan lays out a road map for more than $100 million in building improvements, including potential large-scale renovations beginning in fiscal year 2026. Administrators shared the division's fiscal year 2024-2028 plan with the school board Tuesday night.

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) - Pieces of a lawsuit against the Harrisonburg City School Board have been dismissed. The lawsuit, Deborah Figliola et al. v. The School Board of the City of Harrisonburg, VA, et al., is in regards to model policies regarding the treatment of transgender and non-binary students in school.

Auditors: Frederick County school division's financial records add up

Two independent auditors gave Frederick County Public Schools' financial records a clean bill of health during the School Board's Tuesday meeting. Both auditors, hired by Frederick County, issued clean - or "unmodified" - opinions for the division in recent years, according to statements made at the meeting.

Illnesses prompt Tazewell County schools to move to virtual learning Friday and Monday

TAZEWELL, Va. - Tazewell County Public Schools will move to virtual learning only on Friday and Monday. The school system made the announcement Thursday morning, saying it is because of a "large increase in the amount of confirmed cases of flu, strep throat, COVID and general respiratory inflammation" and how this has impacted the school population.

Two Charlottesville schools receive new names

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Two Charlottesville elementary schools are getting new names. The Charlottesville City Schools Naming of Facilities Committee has recommended changing the names of Clark and Venable elementary schools. After a student vote, Venable will become Trailblazers Elementary. At Clark, it's still a toss-between 'Friendship' and 'Summit'.

2023 VSBA Capital Conference, January 30-31, 2023

This year’s two-day Capital Conference will kick off with a budget and economic outlook for 2023 with the latest update on the Commonwealth’s financial picture. After the budget presentation there will be a conversation between Former Virginia House of Delegate Chris Saxman and Dr. Bob Holsworth with their perspectives on the landscape of Virginia politics in 2023 and beyond. Following this session, attendees will hear from VSBA’s own, J.T. Kessler and Stacy Haney on the happenings at the Capitol for the 2023 Virginia General Assembly.
