Prosecutor: Colonial Heights school officials did not violate state law

Lynchburg Commonwealth's Attorney Bethany Harrison said she still did not believe school officials in Colonial Heights violated Virginia's mandatory reporter law with regard to how they handled "inappropriate behavior" complaints against the former Colonial Heights High school softball coach, after reviewing new information sent to her by a state lawmaker.

Virginia has rolled out its third version of history standards. Critics say problems remain

The Virginia Department of Education's newest draft of the state's history and social science standards aims to address objections raised this fall over content and omissions. However, some history and education groups claim there are still lingering issues that must be addressed as the agency prepares to host a series of public hearings on the latest version beginning March 13 in Williamsburg.

Student found with gun at Richmond middle school

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) -A student at Boushall Middle School was found with a weapon at school Monday afternoon. In a statement to parents and families, Principal LaTonya Waller said a student was found with an unloaded gun on campus. Waller says there was no threat to students or staff, and the weapon was not displayed in a threatening way.

Shenandoah County School Board tentatively approves better teacher pay

'My drivers have become my trainers': Superintendent to become part-time bus driver amid shortages

Students and residents may see Rappahannock County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Shannon Grimsley driving a school bus amid a continued shortage of bus drivers in the district. Grimsley recently began taking the training courses to become certified to drive school buses, which includes four exams through the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, 24 hours of classroom instruction and 10 hours of behind-the-wheel training.

Spotsylvania School Board declines to remove from committees member facing felony charge

Thursday's Spotsylvania County School Board meeting was the first since member Kirk Twigg was indicted by a grand jury, and while a motion was made to remove him from all committee assignments, it was voted down. The charge Twigg is facing, forging a public record, is a Class 4 felony that carries a potential prison sentence of two to 10 years.
