Portsmouth high school to move to virtual learning due to COVID cases among staff

PORTSMOUTH - Churchland High School in Portsmouth will return to virtual learning temporarily due to a rise in COVID-19 cases among staff members at the school. This shift is for Thursday and Friday, Portsmouth Public School officials announced. Live instruction will take place both days, according to an email sent to parents Wednesday.

City Council scuttles meals tax increase, tells school system to 'make do'

WINCHESTER - Two weeks after requesting a fiscal year 2023 budget scenario that included a half-percent increase to Winchester's meals tax rate, City Council has unanimously decided against incorporating a tax hike in its new operating budget. "I can't get behind the meals tax increase because we see enough revenue from other taxes," Councilor Richard Bell said during Tuesday night's City Council meeting.

Budget for Chesterfield schools remains in limbo as state budget delays continue

With the Virginia General Assembly having yet to agree on a state spending plan, Chesterfield's budget for the upcoming school year remains in limbo. School Board members noted that the delays in knowing the county's revenue will impact the district's ability to prepare for 2023 and affect plans for Hope Academy, a pilot program aimed at helping students recover from substance use while continuing their education.

Charlottesville City Schools' new safety model that was rolled out this year is going well, division officials recently told the school board. "I would say it has been successful, and it will improve," said Jason Lee, the division's supervisor of facilities, safety and operations.

ACPS buys two buses that don't require drivers to have CDLs

"It's having quite an impact on getting our students getting to school on time," she said. "Because we need more drivers, we're short, we're having to do double runs. That means we bring in one load and go back and get another. We've also had to do split-out runs.
