Chesterfield calls on Virginia to fully fund state education mandates

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) - The Chesterfield County School Board renewed its call for adequate education funding from the state in a legislative program adopted on Tuesday, Dec. 13. In the program, the school division once again took aim at so-called "unfunded mandates," or requirements that are imposed by the state or federal government on local governments without the funding that would ensure these requirements are implemented.

Pittsylvania County School Board delays implementing gun-free zone resolution

The goal of the original resolution, said Calvin Doss, chairman and representative of the Callands-Gretna district, was to address worries residents had with members of the public appearing at meetings with weapons. The concerned residents were unaware since the public meeting space was not a school, there was no such regulation outlawing guns.

Frederick supervisors allocate $1.2M to school division

After previously tabling votes on two financial appropriations to the school division totaling $1,289,694, the Frederick County Board of Supervisors on Wednesday approved the funding. That included a $1,023,546 allocation that was approved by a 4-2 vote with supervisors Josh Ludwig (Shawnee) and Shawn Graber (Back Creek) dissenting.

Virginia Beach School Board approves $1,000 bonus for all staff during swearing-in ceremony

VIRGINIA BEACH - The Virginia Beach School Board unanimously approved a second round of retention incentives for all division staff, which they can expect to see in their paychecks in the new year. The $1,000 for all full-time equivalent staff will cost the school system approximately $11.6 million in federal pandemic funding.

Staunton City Schools announced the 2022-2023 teachers of the year from each school during Monday night's school board meeting. Staff at each school nominate and vote for one of their peers to be a school-level teacher of the year, a release from the school division said.

Police say juvenile made prank call about shooter at Henrico school

HENRICO, Va. (WWBT) - The Henrico County Police Department says no threat was found after a call about an active shooter at J.R. Tucker High School on Wednesday. "Officers quickly responded to the school within seconds, where they received word from our school resource officers in the building that there was no active threat," police said in a news release.

E.C. Glass principal to retire at end of school year

E.C. Glass High School principal Rose Flaugher will retire at the end of the 2022-23 school year, the school division announced Wednesday. Flaugher, who first started with Glass in 1999, will retire after a 33-year career in public education. She has served in numerous roles, including athletic director, assistant principal and associate principal, before being named principal at E.C.
