NNPS to add 30 security officers, hire Director of Safe Schools

Newport News Public Schools rolled out plans to increase school security during its school board work session Tuesday. The announcement comes more than a month after a shooting at Richneck Elementary School. In work session presentation, board members learned about the top safety concerns of faculty and staff and the district's plan to address those concerns.

Mathews school board adopts budget on 3-2 vote

The Mathews County School Board officially adopted its 2023-2024 budget Tuesday night, but the decision did not come about easily and it wasn't unanimous. At the start of the meeting in the Mathews High School media center, school board member Dr. Marianne Gibbs motioned to take adoption of the budget off that night's agenda and move it to the board's March 21 meeting.

Forensics team takes second

The Madison County High School Forensic Team placed second in the Region 2B Tournament. Will Lillard won first place in Humorous Dramatic. Tommy Wood won first place in Original Oratory. Caroline Wright won first place in Serious Dramatic. Emma Tucker won second place in Poetry. Jamilla Anderson won fourth place alternate in Impromptu Speaking.

New College Institute lab school plan rejected; reapplication plans unclear

The state has so far awarded 10 planning grants to higher education institutions proposing lab schools - publicly funded K-12 schools intended to prepare students for Virginia's evolving workforce needs, including jobs in health care.

Chesterfield school mourning the loss of student after lunchroom medical emergency

The Providence Middle School community is in mourning after one of its students died following a medical emergency in the school's lunchroom last week. Josué Nolasco, 13, was taken to Chippenham Hospital around 11:30 a.m. Feb. 15 after losing consciousness in the school cafeteria, according to information from the Chesterfield County school division and fire department.

GHS renovation project to begin next month

"It's undoubtedly the biggest project Gloucester and Gloucester County Public Schools have ever undertaken." Charles Records, construction/project coordinator for GCPS, is gearing up for the first phase of the Gloucester High School renovation project, which is slated to begin next month. The first phase will include the construction of a new administration office, security vestibule and guidance office.

Loudoun supervisors, school board begin joint budget talks

With proposed budgets for the school division and the county as a whole now on the table, Loudoun's elected officials met Feb. 16 to begin the process of reconciling their respective draft budgets ahead of fiscal year 2024, which begins July 1.

Montgomery County school board member Sue Kass won't seek reelection

Sue Kass announced Tuesday night that she won't seek another term on the Montgomery County School Board. Kass, whose time on the board began in 2020, cited her need to spend time with her elderly parents. She said her father had a heart procedure performed on him earlier in the day.

Pittsylvania County School Board again delays implementing gun-free zone at meetings

The Pittsylvania County School Board has again delayed implementing a gun-free zone resolution after meeting with county leaders. The resolution - that includes the space where meetings are held - was passed in November to address worries residents had with members of the public appearing at meetings with weapons.
