Amherst high school addition, renovation project to require town zoning approval

A video simulation of a walk through a planned addition to Amherst County High School recently was presented to Amherst Town Council and the county's school board. Amherst County Public Schools Superintendent William Wells said the renovation and addition, a $19.3 million project, is set to go to bid in early 2023.

Hampton Roads graduation rates remain steady, improving over time. Here's the breakdown.

On-time graduation rates for school divisions across Hampton Roads remained steady from 2021 to 2022. Most saw their rates increase or decrease by roughly a percentage point or less. The state's on-time graduation rate for 2022 is 92.1%. Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Virginia Beach and York County public schools all surpassed that.

Tweak made to trim costs as new HCHS moves ahead

Halifax County School trustees directed the project manager and architects for the Halifax County High School project to make a cost-saving adjustment in plans. Trustees agreed the new school will have only four automotive bays instead of six in its Career and Technical Education department.

911 tracking/mapping system to spread to all Wise County schools

WISE - Wise County School Board members got a look at a 911 call tracking system which will also give first responder teams a photographic map of a school where an emergency happens. Scott Kiser, technology director for the school system, showed a demonstration of Rapid SOS to the board Tuesday.

Freeman High School community mourning death of teacher - The Henrico Citizen

The Freeman High School community is in mourning, following the unexpected death of social studies teacher Lara Curry. Curry died Oct. 8. Principal John Marshall announced the news to the school community Monday morning, calling her death "devastating" for everyone, especially the students enrolled in her classes this fall.

Loudoun County teacher honored by Mount Vernon

George Washington's Mount Vernon has awarded the 2022 History Teacher of the Year to Nellie Beaman, a sixth-grade history teacher at Eagle Ridge Middle School in Ashburn. The Mount Vernon History Teacher of the Year award is presented annually to one teacher in the Washington area who brings creativity and passion to their teaching and deepens their students' understanding and appreciation of history, according to a news release.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - A four-episode tells the story of the scientific discovery of Lake Ballard in the Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve in Portsmouth. For nearly two decades, the lake was believed to be brackish water - a mix of salt and fresh water - that was until four high school students came poking around.

SCPS drops word 'honors' from Gifted Local Plan - The Tidewater News

The Southampton County School Board voted at its regular September meeting to approve an amended Local Plan for the Education of the Gifted that removed the word "honors" from the plan. Southampton County Public Schools Director of Curriculum and Instruction Kelli Gillette presented the proposed amendment to the board.
