Former Highland Springs High to serve as region's first full-service community school

The old Highland Springs High School building in Eastern Henrico was spruced up over the summer, and will reopen to students on Monday with a new purpose. The site, which has been rebranded as the "Oak Avenue Complex," will soon serve as the first full-service community school in Central Virginia.

More schools taking a much harder line on cellphones, as indicated by latest Virginia Beach vote

VIRGINIA BEACH - This week, Virginia Beach's school system became one of the latest to adopt policies and regulations that restrict cell phone usage during school hours. Under the regulations, Virginia Beach students must keep their cell phones off and put away in a personal bag or in a teacher designated area "during instructional time or in instructional settings."

Activist group Moms for Liberty submits 14 more books for removal in Fauquier County Public Schools

Mechanicsville principal apologizes for 'critical oversight' amid football hazing investigation

MECHANICSVILLE, Va. - The principal of Mechanicsville High School sent a phone message late Thursday to parents of football players at the school apologizing for the "critical oversight" of "not sending more formal communication sooner regarding the misconduct concerns."

Alleghany Co. Sheriff's office investigates bomb threat sent through Airdrop in school

COVINGTON, Va. (WFXR) - Alleghany High School had to evacuate students and faculty on the afternoon of August. 24, in response to a bomb threat sent via Airdrop. According the principal of Alleghany High School, the threat was sent through Airdrop during the third lunch block on Wednesday.

Galax City Public Schools English proficiency increases 56%

GALAX, Va. (WDBJ) - Galax City Schools has been focused on helping English Language Learners succeed. We first told you about the "Get Ready" program last year to aid English Learners. 30% of the Galax City students are Hispanic and 18% are enrolled in the English Learners program.

Virginia Tribes work with state officials on correct history education standards

A delay in Virginia's overhaul of state standards for history and social studies learning standards has some concerned, but one minority group is confident changes they've made will stick. At the Nansemond Pow Wow last weekend one of the booths was manned by a group represented by the seven federally recognized Tribes in Virginia.

FCC grants $1.4 million for Richmond Schools to buy new student Chromebooks

Richmond Public Schools is planning to purchase 4,500 new Chromebooks for students after obtaining a $1.4 million federal grant this summer. The money comes from a special Federal Communications Commission program intended to help school divisions and libraries set up students and families with laptops, modems, routers and other equipment for remote learning during the coronavirus pandemic.

Spotsylvania School Board votes to recommend Taylor for superintendent post

The Spotsylvania County School Board on Thursday evening voted to send a letter to the Virginia Board of Education indicating that it intends to hire Mark Taylor to the position of division superintendent, and asking that his name be added to a list of candidates eligible for a superintendent license.

ROANOKE, Va. - Roanoke school leaders discussed data from a youth risk survey on Thursday. The Roanoke County School Board heard data in regards to the 2022 Youth Behavior Risk Survey, which asks middle and high school students questions regarding alcohol and drug use.
