Martinsville school board tables mandated COVID-19 testing for athletes

After considerable discussion, the Martinsville school board decided to table a proposal by Superintendent Zeb Talley to implement a 30-day trial of mandated COVID-19 testing for athletes, which had been set to begin next week. "I would like to see the data efficacy and how others are doing with it and how it's affecting the children," said school board member Jay Dickens.

With write-ins counted, two new faces will join Bedford County School Board

After several days of counting write-in votes, the results are in: Two new faces will join the Bedford County School Board. Bedford parent and write-in candidate Matthew Holbrook, 39, upset incumbent Jason Johnson, winning the District 2 seat by nearly 200 votes.

LCPS faces scrutiny over attorney at firm hired to review handling of sexual assaults

Loudoun County Public Schools on Monday responded to criticism that the law firm hired to conduct an outside review of the division's handling of allegations of sexual assault earlier this year was not "independent," saying the firm was chosen by LCPS' insurer, and not by LCPS.

Winchester School Board approves student-athlete vax-or-test policy

WINCHESTER - A coronavirus vaccinate-or-test policy for student-athletes has been approved by the Winchester School Board. Michael Birchenough, Carmen Crawford, Bryan Pearce-Gonzales, Vice Chair Karen M. Anderson Holman and Erica Truban voted yes. Elyus Wallace voted no. Board President Marie Imoh was absent from Monday's meeting.

In the 4-to-3 vote on the proposed changes involving bathroom and locker room facilities , Chairwoman Ola J. Hawkins, Vice Chairman Robert L. Hundley Jr. and board member Sterling H. Daniel voted in support of the policies.

Pittsylvania County School Board blesses recount efforts, extends Thanksgiving holiday

The Pittsylvania County School Board voted unanimously Tuesday night to forge ahead with efforts to seek a recount after a 1% sales-tax measure to improve facilities failed by 23 votes in last week's election and also extended more staff time off for Thanksgiving week.

Chesterfield County Schools has hired 54 new bus drivers since August, more are needed

Chesterfield County Public Schools has hired 54 bus drivers since the start of the school year, which began with transportation headaches as the system faced a triple-digit driver shortage. As the school division continues to chip away at closing its gap of bus drivers, it continues to lose some of them.

J.P. King Jr. named a top middle school in state - The Tidewater News

Franklin City Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Tamara Sterling announced at the Nov. 4 division school board meeting that U.S. News & World Report had named Joseph P. King Jr. Middle School one of the best middle schools in Virginia. The data leading to this accolade was based on the 2018-19 and 2019-20 school years.
