Many Richmond-area families continuing to home-school during pandemic

When Delilah Alexander of Henrico County and her son, Jennings Caldwell, joined the Richmond Homeschool Collective this past fall, home-schooling was not new to them. While Alexander has always home-schooled her son, 17, she's met families through the collective who began their home-schooling journey because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Williamsburg-James City County School Board doesn't order new textbooks after complaints about 'divisive teachings'

With the school board not agreeing to purchase new social studies textbooks, the schools lose their chance to buy new textbooks for another year, meaning that students will be using textbooks that are at least 12 years old with outdated material.

Roanoke County schools removes 'inappropriate' questions from youth risk surveys

Roanoke County Public Schools students took the biennial Youth Risk Behavior Survey last month, but questions about sexual behaviors were removed from the middle school surveys after being deemed inappropriate for the first time since the surveys have been administered, according to school officials.

School board vote expected on where Fox students will finish school year

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - The RPS school board has a big decision to make. It's expected to vote today about where Fox Elementary students will learn for the rest of the school year. The Fox building went up in flames back in February.

County Board Chair Ann Wheeler tests positive for COVID-19 about 24 hours after board meeting

Prince William Board of County Supervisors Chair Ann Wheeler tested positive for COVID-19 "late Wednesday evening," about 24 hours after she attended a public meeting with her fellow supervisors and several community members on Tuesday, April 19. Wheeler, 61, said Friday she is experiencing "some symptoms, which are manageable."

Albemarle judge dismisses anti-racism lawsuit against school division

An Albemarle County Circuit Court judge dismissed a civil lawsuit Friday that alleged that the county school board's anti-racism policy discriminates against students and creates a culture of hostility. "I think you are wrong and your case is going to show it," Judge Claude Worrell told the plaintiffs' attorneys during the hearing.

Henrico School Board adopts $762.9M budget with 5% raises for staff - The Henrico Citizen

The Henrico School Board voted unanimously on Thursday night to adopt a $762.9 million operating budget for the fiscal year starting July 1. The Henrico Board of Supervisors added $20.4 million to the school district's recommended budget last month, which will provide a 5% salary increase for most employees.

Chesapeake Public Schools names interim chief academic officer

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - Chesapeake Public Schools has named an interim Chief Academic Officer. CPS announced Monday that Diane Watkins Edwards, who has been with CPS for 27 years, will be interim chief academic officer. Edwards has a total of thirty-two years in education and has previously held positions as a special education teacher, a special education coordinator and an assistant principal at E.W.
