Roanoke County students design, build device for classmate with cerebral palsy

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. - Meet 17-year-old Bermet Moore. She's a student at Roanoke County's Burton Center for Arts & Technology. Moore has cerebral palsy, a disorder that affects her ability to talk, walk and control her muscles. It's difficult for her to write or type. Her English Language Learner teacher Margaret Whitt wanted to help.

WPS outlines proposed COVID vaccination policy for staff, student-athletes

WINCHESTER - School Board members are considering requiring Winchester Public Schools staff and student-athletes to get vaccinated for the coronavirus or get tested weekly. "This is not a mandate as this testing option exists," board member Bryan Pearce-Gonzales said at the board's Monday work session.

Virginia Beach schools 'equity resolution' fails to pass

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Members of the Virginia Beach School Board are looking at racial equity and how it should be taught in school. The resolution, written by board Member Carolyn Weems, was up for debate Tuesday and would have laid down the foundation to prevent critical race theory from being taught on school property.

Hanover parents weigh in on proposed policies for transgender and nonbinary students

The board will vote on all of the proposed policies at its November meeting. Earlier Tuesday evening, before board members could discuss the changes, attendees spoke during the public comment segment of the meeting, mostly in opposition to the state law - particularly the aspects that allow transgender students to use bathrooms and locker rooms corresponding with their preferred gender.

School board responds to numerous citizens' concerns

At its October 11 meeting the Campbell County School Board addressed a number of persistent concerns voiced by county residents at recent meetings. Robert Johnson, superintendent of schools, opened the meeting this week.
