Hampton schools will launch pilot K-5 online learning program

HAMPTON - Online learning didn't work for everyone during the pandemic, but public educators said some students thrived academically. During the summer of 2020, Kate Maxlow began to brainstorm what would become Hampton City Schools' Future Learning Experience, also known as the FLEx program, which will launch next school year for K-5 students.

Teachers and students in Prince William County are adjusting to another new normal this week, with students having the option to attend classes without wearing a mask for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began in March 2020.

Roanoke City Schools teachers, staff to see pay increase

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - Roanoke City Public Schools teachers and staff will see a pay raise next school year. Leaders say the raise could be up to 14%. This change is a part of the district's nearly $30 million budget increase, which was approved at Tuesday night's school board meeting.

How Lynchburg City Schools is handling the change to mask-optional learning

Soon your child won't be required to wear a mask in school. Beginning Tuesday, Senate Bill 739 goes into effect, making masks optional. Lynchburg City Schools Superintendent Crystal Edwards said they will continue their mitigation strategies, and they have no plans to separate masked students from those without.

Henrico Schools to discontinue COVID-19 screening testing for athletes in spring season - The Henrico Citizen

Henrico County Public Schools student-athletes participating in spring sports will not be required to undergo weekly COVID-19 screening testing. The decision was made based in part on the county's strong vaccination rate, said HCPS Chief of Staff Beth Teigen during a Henrico School Board work session Feb. 24.

Pittsylvania County teacher receives presidential award

Superintendent of Public Instruction Jillian Balow recently congratulated two Virginia teachers who were recognized this month by the White House and the National Science Foundation with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Cathleen Drake-McGarvey, a fifth-grade science teacher at Stony Mill Elementary in Pittsylvania County, received the presidential award for K-6 science.

Alexandria schools will make masking optional for students in obedience to new law

Masking will soon be optional for students attending Alexandria City Public Schools, as officials with the Northern Virginia district bow to a recently passed Virginia law that requires school systems statewide to let parents decide whether children mask.
