Petersburg Public Schools announce 2023 Division Teacher of the Year

7th-grade history teacher Bianca Lampley was chosen by Petersburg City Public Schools as the Division Teacher of the Year for 2023. The Vernon Johns Middle School instructor calls herself the #TheRappinTeacher and raps in class. She uses rap music to connect and engage with her students through the music they listen to.

Albemarle County schools deputy superintendent to retire in June

Albemarle County Public Schools Deputy Superintendent Debora Collins has announced that she will retire on June 30 after four decades working in the school system. Since joining Henley Middle School as a math teacher in 1983, Collins has served several roles in the division.

HCPS presents proposed $102,000,000 budget; students recognized for a variety of achievements

The Henry County Public Schools (HCPS) board approved a budget for next year of $101,748,527, and it will now be sent to the Henry County Board of Supervisors. "Our budget objectives for the FY 2024 budget development are few but they are very much on target," Assistant Superintendent of Operations and Administrative Services David Scott said.

U.S. Dept of Ed investigating civil rights claim related to Powhatan school consent form - Virginia Mercury

The U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights is investigating whether Powhatan County Public Schools discriminated against a student with disabilities and then retaliated against the child and their family for their advocacy efforts because the student's mother refused to sign a consent form letting the division share certain information with other local and state agencies and service providers.

He'd had seizures since birth, and by age 4, the full impact his condition would have on his school performance was becoming apparent.

Manassas teachers may get 5% raises, retention bumps

Manassas City Public Schools is considering a $126.79 million operating budget for the coming 2024 fiscal year, with a 5% average employee raise and 1% retention bonus as was mandated for standards of quality teachers in the state budget.

Family Explores Legal Action After Student Forced to Pick Cotton in Class

A mother frustrated by what she calls a lack of resolution to an issue at her son's school is exploring legal action. Students in an eighth grade French class at Gunston Middle School in Arlington were told to put Vaseline on their noses and see how many cotton balls they could pick out of a bucket of water with their noses.

Tradition broken: Clarke County's spring break to be after Easter next year

For the first time, spring break for Clarke County Public Schools students and employees will be after Easter next year. A 2023-24 academic year calendar adopted by the School Board earlier this week schedules the break for April 1-5, 2024.

Policy revision regarding transgender students to be voted on at Monday meeting

The school board of Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) has given the community one week to provide input on a proposed policy revision that would require staff to notify a parent if their child identifies as transgender or nonbinary, as well as providing protections for those who choose not to refer to students by their preferred name or pronouns.
