Alexandria schools will require coronavirus vaccine for staff

Alexandria City Public Schools will require staff to receive the coronavirus vaccine ahead of the upcoming academic year, the school board decided Thursday at a specially called meeting - at which the board also named an interim superintendent, Melanie Kay-Wyatt.

Imoh re-elected as Winchester School Board chair

WINCHESTER - During its annual organization meeting on Thursday, the Winchester School Board unanimously re-elected Marie Imoh as its chair and elected Bryan Pearce-Gonzales as its vice chair. Imoh, a School Board member since 2015, is currently an at-large member with a term that expires in 2024.

Norfolk school board elects new interim chair and vice chair

NORFOLK - Familiar faces will lead the school board for the remainder of the year. Board members Carlos Clanton and Noelle Gabriel were voted in as interim chair and vice chair, respectively, during a meeting July 5. Clanton was previously the board's vice chair, and Gabriel most recently chaired the board from 2018-20.

IB School Selection Draws Complaints - Loudoun Now

Mary Martha Aubry is a mother to three children in Loudoun County Public Schools. They are currently zoned to attend Tuscarora High School. She said when she moved into the neighborhood she was told by her neighbors if she didn't want her kids to go Tuscarora when they started high school, they could apply to the ROTC program at Loudoun County High School and attend school out of their designated area.

Roanoke Valley school districts team up for 'Load the Bus' supply drive

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - Roanoke County Public Schools is teaming up with Roanoke City Public Schools, Salem City Public Schools and Craig County Public Schools to make sure students have everything they need ahead of the school year. School districts across the Roanoke Valley are collecting school supplies and donations for students in need now through Virginia's Tax-Free Weekend from August 5-7.

Richmond Public Schools looking to fill 270 positions

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - With less than a month before the first day of school, Richmond Public Schools is looking to fill about 270 positions. As of Aug. 1, there are 163 teacher positions open, as well as numerous jobs for bus drivers, custodians and cafeteria workers.

Unfilled needs remain as new school year nears

Needs that remain may not be as dire for Martinsville, Henry and Patrick County school systems as other districts in the region, but each say the problems are real. As of July 22, Franklin County Public Schools said they were short 20 bus drivers and had no substitute drivers.

A Cornerstone of the community - The Henrico Citizen

A harvest at Cornerstone Farm (courtesy Community Food Collaborative) Fairfield Middle School's Cornerstone Farm has blossomed beyond belief. The USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service contributed $25,000 to Fairfield School and the nonprofit Community Food Collaborative that helps manage the farm. Laurel Lane Elementary Students Learn Science While Making Healthy Alternative to Ice Cream | Williamsburg Yorktown Daily

WILLIAMSBURG - A fourth-grade summer school class at Laurel Lane Elementary School discovered a creative way to make ice cream last week. The group of young students learned how to use Greek Yogurt to create an ice cream-like dessert. The lesson was a part of the School Health Initiative Progam (SHIP) at Williamsburg-James City County (WJCC) Schools.

Design work continues on Buford redesign but inflation looms

Construction of the planned Buford Middle School expansion could start within the next year if plans don't get changed in the next 11 months. The $68.8 million project will be the city's largest capital investment in schools since the construction of Charlottesville High School in 1974.
