Valley superintendents discuss school challenges with area legislators

Superintendents and school board members from several valley school divisions met with legislators at Triplett Tech in Mount Jackson on Thursday morning. During the annual 'Take Your Legislator to School' event superintendents highlighted the different challenges local schools face and asked legislators for help.

Fairfax city poised to have first all-female school board in years

Five women - Stacy Hall, Amit Hickman, Sarah Kelsey, Rachel McQuillen and Carolyn Pitches - have chosen to run for the Fairfax City school board this November. It is the first time in years the board is poised to have only women at the helm on the five-person board.

Two Staunton schools go on a lockdown, 13-year-old boy in custody

STAUNTON, Va. (WHSV) - Shelburne Middle School and Ware Elementary School went on lockdown Friday morning after the schools received a report of someone trying to enter a locked door at the middle school around 9:30 a.m. The school district said parents of students at both schools were notified as quickly as possible.

Prince William School Board considering parental consent for school-wide book readings

The Prince William County School Board is considering a proposal that would require school administrators to notify parents ahead of any school-wide book readings or assemblies. Potomac Board Member Justin Wilk, who's proposing the resolution along with Gainesville Member Jen Wall, told InsideNoVa the policy change would simply mandate what many school principals are already doing.

Craig Co. Schools closed on Monday due to staff illnesses

CRAIG Co., Va. (WDBJ) - A local school district will have the next two days off. According to an announcement by the group on Sunday, "Due to a high number of staff illnesses, Craig County Public Schools will be closed tomorrow, Monday November 7, 2022."

Petersburg Schools call student absences an emergency situation. That's why they're going to student homes.

PETERSBURG, Va. - Petersburg School leaders started a campaign to reach truant students and their families after a surge in absences. The district launched "2 Days is Too Many" over the weekend. Two days of absences a month by November is an issue, said Director of Student Support Services Dr. Tyrus Lyles.

Norfolk School Board adopts 'special rules' for public comment that critics say silence community members

The Norfolk School Board's newly adopted special rules separates public comment during meetings into agenda and non-agenda periods, and the non-agenda period will take place off-camera. Interim Board Chair Carlos Clanton said this is to "streamline" the meetings, but many say it restricts free speech.
