VSBA Establishes Task Force to Address School Construction and Infrastructure Funding Needs

On June 2, 2022, the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) Board of Directors voted to establish a task force focused on assisting school boards in advocating for best practices and outcomes for improving the infrastructure of school divisions in the Commonwealth. The VSBA Task Force on School Infrastructure Needs will engage federal, state, and local leaders to ensure the need for increased federal and state resources is recognized as a critical priority.

Judge dismisses recall against Brooks-Buck - The Suffolk News-Herald

A judge ruled Thursday in Suffolk Circuit Court that the recall effort against Suffolk School Board Chairwoman Dr. Judith Brooks-Buck was without merit and dismissed the petition against her. Brooks-Buck, who represents the Nansemond Borough on the board, smiled as the judge gave his ruling, but said afterward she believes the efforts of the group who organized the petition against her will continue.

ACPS considering public transportation use for students

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - Albemarle County Public Schools, Jaunt, and Charlottesville Area Transit are coming up with a plan for students. "We're looking at the possibility of the city's bus system, which is CAT being able to transport as many as 400 of our students who live in the urban grid," ACPS Strategic Communications Officer Phil Giaramita said.

Roanoke Valley teachers adapt, innovate to help English learners

Spanish language filled the Salem High School hallways as baseball players and students teamed up for a schoolwide scavenger hunt. About 15 Salem Red Sox team members joined more than 30 English language learners in early May as they searched for sticky notes with clues that sent them to their next objective.

Fighting, drug violations up in Prince William County schools

Just as Prince William County Public Schools was recognizing "Mental Health Awareness Month" in May, a new report underscored a troubling rise in student misconduct in county schools. A recent presentation to the school system's Safe Schools Advisory Committee, obtained by InsideNoVa through a Freedom of Information Act request, shows a significant rise in student misconduct involving fighting and drugs, particularly among middle and high school students.
