Alexandria school board backs new school police advisory group

Placeholder while article actions load The Alexandria City School Board gave approval Thursday for top school administrators to create an advisory group to review andpropose changes to the district's partnership with police. Formation of the School Law Enforcement Partnership Advisory Group (SLEP) was delayed after a tense meeting last month in which board members could not reach a consensus about the group's makeup.

Fredericksburg students get a history lesson in lesser-known local Civil War figure

As a group of more than a dozen James Monroe High School students sat in the chilly rain on Monday afternoon at Old Mill Park in Fredericksburg, they envisioned an escaped slave crossing the Rappahannock River to freedom. It was the 160th anniversary of John Washington accepting the Union soldiers' invitation to cross the Rappahannock and leave behind a life of bondage.

Chesterfield County School Board member Ryan Harter is running for the open and redistricted 73rd District seat in the Virginia House of Delegates, whose stronghold Republicans regained in November's elections. In a Thursday morning news release announcing his candidacy, the former public school teacher and Air Force veteran cast himself as a fighter against "the radical policies of far left Democrats in the House" and a champion for "parental rights."

Two RPS schools named Dept. of Education Green Ribbon Schools Award honorees
