With fewer buses, students in city and county hit the road to school

Area schools are opening up for the year on Wednesday, but there will be fewer big yellow buses and lot more pairs of feet taking students to class. A shortage of bus drivers across the commonwealth and in Charlottesville and Albemarle County is leading to fewer bus routes and longer bus rides, some as long as 90 minutes or more in the rural areas of the county.

BERRYVILLE - Clarke County Public Schools begins its 2022-23 school year today. As part of a return-to-school plan adopted by the School Board on Monday night, masks are optional during the COVID-19 pandemic. In March, Gov. Virginia Beach School Board unanimously votes for no cellphones during instructional hours

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Tuesday night, a proposed policy regarding cell phones was unanimously voted on during the Virginia Beach School Board meeting. Under the policy, cell phones will not be permitted to be used during instructional hours; however, students will be permitted to have their phones with them at school.

George Washington High School to strictly enforce metal detectors after gun taken to school

DANVILLE, Va. (WDBJ) - Police arrested a 15-year-old student Tuesday afternoon at George Washington High School for being in possession of a handgun. Police found the gun in the boy's bookbag after he had an argument with another student. The discovery was thanks to three students who spoke up and told teachers.

Bedford County supervisors discuss grant for up to 14 more school resource officers

BEDFORD - Bedford County supervisors are discussing the potential addition of 14 school resource officer positions within Bedford County public schools thanks to a state-level grant. Bedford County Public Schools currently have all established SRO positions filled, a total of seven among three high schools and three middle schools, Bedford County Sheriff Mike Miller said at a Monday work session of the board of supervisors.
