Recess expected to come to all Fairfax Co. middle schools next year | WTOP News

Virginia's largest school system is expected to approve a daily recess requirement for middle school students that would go into effect next school year. The Fairfax County, Virginia, school board pushed a final vote on the measure to next month, but Superintendent Scott Brabrand said middle school principals are already working on how to incorporate the short recess period into daily schedules.

Yorktown 10-year-old wins lottery art contest

YORKTOWN, Va. (WAVY) - You have to be 18 to play the lottery, but a 10-year-old Yorktown girl took home a big prize from the Virginia Lottery not because of her luck, but her talent. Lottery officials surprised Nitha Nithin at Coventry Elementary School Tuesday morning with the announcement that she is one of just three winners statewide in the "Thank A Teacher Art Contest."

School board approves $32.3M budget

By Larry Chambers, Staff INDEPENDENCE - The Grayson County School Board approved its 2022-2023 school operating budget during its regular meeting held March 21. The total budget is $32.3 million, up $7.1 million from the current fiscal year's budget of $25.2 million.

Dr. Eric Bond named Region V Superintendent of the Year

AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) - Dr. Eric W. Bond, Superintendent of Augusta County Public Schools, has been named the Region V Superintendent of the Year. One of the eight regions in Virginia, Region V consists of 20 school divisions that make up the Valley region.

HENRICO, Va. (WWBT) - Henrico County Public Schools will hold an information session to discuss the district's first fully virtual K-12 school. Parents will be able to learn more about how the Henrico Virtual Academy is structured, and the process to apply for the next school year. The meeting is from 6:00 p.m.

Spotsylvania School Board approves restructured plan for staff bonuses

The Spotsylvania County School Board on Monday approved a restructured plan for providing staff bonuses using carryover funds. The School Board in December approved using a portion of about $14 million in carryover funds from the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2021 to give all staff $1,000 bonuses and to implement a mid-year hourly raise, effective January 2022, for bus drivers and custodians.

Mary Carr Greer Elementary School next to go through naming review

(ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Virginia)-Albemarle County Public Schools Superintendent, Dr. Matthew Haas, announced last night that the next school to conduct a naming review will be Mary Carr Greer Elementary School. The school, named for Mary Carr Greer, a local educator, annually has an enrollment of approximately 400 students.
