HENRCIO, Va. (WWBT) - A 14-year-old from Henrico won a national STEM competition for her 3D printed drone that can land on water. Camellia Sharma won the DoD STEM Talent Award in the Broadcom MASTERS, and her prize was $10,000.

The Virginia Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts awarded Josh Fleenor, Agriculture teacher at Cumberland County High School, as the 2021 Conservation Education Teacher of the Year for the Secondary Level (Grades 6-12). Fleenor's agriculture classes focus on promoting leadership and developing workplace readiness skills.

Henry County School Nutrition will serve meals at no charge to children 18 and under through the At-Risk Afterschool Meals Program. The same meals will be available at no separate charge to all participants at each site.

The deadline arrived Monday for D.C. teachers, school staffers, school bus drivers and child care workers to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - More than 1,000 Albemarle County teachers gathered this week to learn how to better support their students. Albemarle County goes through a "Making Connections" learning every year, but this year there was a brand new session.

One Virginia school district has made select Wednesdays shorter for students as teacher burnout through the coronavirus pandemic drags on. The district's superintendent said the move was to give teachers more time amid a historic shortage of educators.

"Grant applications for 2021 reflected the return to in-person learning," said Tammy Maxey, Virginia AITC programs director. "Projects represented a wide range of plant and animal educational projects, from creating urban gardens to learning to grow food through hydroponics to animal care projects for both small and large animals.

A new elementary school intended to alleviate acute growth pressures in one of the fastest-expanding counties in Virginia is on course to open in New Kent in the fall of 2022. Kyle Moser, the planning principal of Quinton Elementary School, praised the progress of work on the school and said dry weather means it's on course to welcome students for the start of the 2022-23 academic year.

A $1 million dollar grant has been awarded to three school systems in Southwest Virginia and will help improve technology for area students. A rural utilities service grant was awarded to Bristol, Virginia city schools, Radford City Schools, and Wise County schools. The money will be split three ways.
