Judge lets grand jury keep investigating sexual assaults in Loudoun schools

A Loudoun County judge ruled Monday that a grand jury investigation of the Loudoun County Public Schools' handling of two sexual assaults can move forward, despite a legal challenge from the county school board. "We cannot know where this will lead," Judge Jim Plowman said in Loudoun County Circuit Court, explaining his ruling.

With more students off the bus, parents call for safety improvements to city streets

With hundreds more Charlottesville students expected to walk or bike to school next year, community members want the city to improve intersections and crosswalks to ensure a safer trip to and from school. The changes sought so far include repainting crosswalks around schools and on walking routes, improved signs to alert drivers to stop for pedestrians, reduced speed limits and expanded school zones.

Norfolk orchestra teacher to get life-altering surgery after support from students, community and even Alec Baldwin

NORFOLK - Ryan Featherer's insurance denied coverage for a surgery that could reduce the pain he lives with every day, but he, his students and others did not accept that. They knew it would help him be able to play with his children for more than a few minutes at a time and stop the "cocktail" of medications needed to get through each day, so they fought back together.

Decision On Proposed Name Change Policy Pushed Back

The Rockingham County School Board was set to receive a legal report on a proposed policy during a closed session following Monday's regular meeting. However, the School Board member who proposed the policy, Matt Cross, was not present at Monday's meeting.

Shenandoah County school renaming lawsuit appeal rejected

The Supreme Court of Virginia decided not to hear a third lawsuit regarding the name changes of two Shenandoah County schools. Bradley Pollack, a Woodstock attorney and member of the Shenandoah County Board of Supervisors, had filed a civil suit seeking to reverse the School Board's $300,000 allocation to implement the renaming of the former Stonewall Jackson High School (now called Mountain View) and the former Ashby Lee Elementary School (now Honey Run).

CTE school site announced; will be Roanoke County's largest capital project

Roanoke County Public Schools found the land where it wants to build the county's largest capital project in its history - a new career and technical education facility. The four parcels of land where the new center will be built is adjacent to Peters Creek Road between Airport Road and Burlington Elementary School.

Northampton Education Foundation Grants $56,000 - Eastern Shore Post

By Stefanie Jackson - The Northampton County Education Foundation provided nearly $56,000 to support the teachers and students of Northampton County Public Schools in the 2021-2022 school year and spent less than $5,200 on its operations. Linda Schulz, NCEF president and board chair, presented the nonprofit's annual impact report to the Northampton school board at its June 23 meeting.

Montgomery County school voucher debate continues

CHRISTIANSBURG - A crowd turned out Monday night to continue to debate the call for school vouchers in Montgomery County, including a contingent that voiced opposition in larger numbers for the first time. Vouchers are measures that would provide taxpayer money to families who could move their students from public schools to either private or homeschool.

Henrico schools to request 10 more SROs, more than $5 million for security upgrades

Henrico County Public Schools will make two major requests to the board of supervisors at its next meeting: more than $5 million for security camera upgrades and 10 more school resource officers. The request comes after the Uvalde, Texas, school shooting in May that killed 19 children and two adults as well as what county leaders have called an increase in youth violence over the past school year.
