ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) - The Rockingham County School Board met Monday, and among other items on the agenda, discussed the school division's COVID-19 mitigation strategies and potential changes. Last month, the school board voted 3-2 to keep masks for now but agreed to reconsider the issue of masks in schools at its meeting on Feb.

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Families of Fox Elementary made their way to Clark Springs Elementary on Tuesday to pick up their online learning kits before students head back to class virtually on Wednesday. From the Clark Springs gymnasium came the sound of music and excitement as Richmond Public Schools employees showed their support for families impacted by last Friday's three-alarm fire.

On Monday, Alexandria, Virginia, Public Schools announced it had purchased the property at 1703 N. Beauregard Street, which the district plans to eventually convert into a new school. In a news release, the school system said it had closed on the property last Friday. The School Board had begun talks on buying the building last summer.

Leaders of the Virginia Coalition of Small and Rural Schools continued to advocate for more funding to repair and replace dilapidated schools statewide Monday. Speaking during an education funding press conference in Richmond, speakers from different state advocacy organizations urged the General Assembly to expand funding for school buildings, behavioral health for students, greater teacher pay, revised Standards of Quality and literacy intervention.

Mask mandates are still in effect for Prince William County schools, but Superintendent LaTanya McDade says the division is closely monitoring developments from the General Assembly. On Monday, t he Virginia House of Delegates passed SB 739, which had already cleared the State Senate and would ban mandatory mask mandates in Virginia schools effective July 1.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Concern over masking in schools took over most of Tuesday's Newport News school board meeting. Although the district's mask policy was not a topic in the meeting agenda, dozens of parents asked the board to follow other districts in Hampton Roads such as Virginia Beach and Chesapeake and make masks optional.

The Amherst County School Board unanimously approved a resolution supporting borrowing millions of dollars for an addition and renovation to the county's high school.
