Arlington Public Schools' online-tutoring initiative winning converts

Arlington Public Schools' secondary-school students already have received more than 113,000 minutes of support through a new-for-2022 initiative with an online contractor that offers assistance through tutoring and review of work. More than 2,060 Arlington students at 13 schools have taken advantage of the free (to students if not to taxpayers) 24/7 service offered by a firm called Paper.

Lynchburg's Vector Space hosts engineering mentoring program

On Tuesday, the Lynchburg nonprofit makerspace Vector Space hosted a group of 40 high school students from around the region who were mentored by engineers from nuclear services firms BWX Technologies and Framatome. The students and mentors were separated into two teams for a collaborative building project.

Updated design for new Halifax County High School approved

The Halifax County School Board approved an updated design for the new Halifax County High School at its Monday evening meeting. Approval of the new concept was unanimous. In the new concept, both wings of the high school are three-story, versus the original concept which had one two-story wing and one three-story wing.

Community Foundation Honors Recipients of the Dawbarn Education Award

Pictures were worth a thousand words on Wednesday, so to speak. The Community Foundation of Central Blue Ridge, a nonprofit organization serving the communities of Staunton, Waynesboro and Augusta County, celebrated its 30th anniversary on Wednesday evening at the Wayne Theatre in downtown Waynesboro.

Salem council appoints Raines, Danstrom to school board

Salem City Council appointed two members to serve three-year terms on the school board following a closed session at Monday's meeting. Andy Raines will serve his fourth term on the board, and newcomer Stacey Danstrom will replace Artice Ledbetter, who did not seek a fifth term. The terms begin Jan.

Winchester School Board reviewing student dress and grooming code

WINCHESTER - One month after the Frederick County School Board voted to review its student dress policy, the Winchester School Board has decided to do the same. The city school system's current dress and grooming code was first included in its student code of conduct in October 2020, Winchester Public Schools Director of Student Services Jennifer Buckley told the city School Board at its work session Monday night.

Patrick County schools employee dismissed, may lose teaching license

A Patrick County Public Schools employee has been dismissed with recommendation to have teaching license revoked. No other information was made public on the former employee referred to only as "Case Number 22-001" during Thursday's Patrick County School Board meeting in Stuart.

Juveniles charged in MSHS threat

Two juveniles have been charged in connection to a threat that was airdropped to Marion Senior High School students on Monday. Smyth County Sheriff Chip Shuler said both juveniles are facing charges of unlawfully communicating a threat to kill or do serious bodily injury "made with the intent to compel the emergency evacuation of Marion Senior High School.

Leesburg Police Investigate Threat at Heritage High

The Leesburg Police Department has stepped up patrols at Heritage High School after learning of a rumored threat reported through the Safe2Talk App. The LPD school resource officer assigned to Heritage High School is investigating the matter, which the department described as a not believed to be credible threat.

School zone cameras now active in Altavista

ALTAVISTA, Va. (WDBJ) - In Altavista, school zone cameras are now active. That means people caught speeding more than ten miles per hour over the speed limit in a school zone will be issued a violation. The violations can be issued when flashing lights are on.
