Martinsville schools first in Virginia to install window shutter system to protect students

MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Martinsville City Public School officials say students are a little safer this year thanks to a simple yet effective new tool in classrooms. The window in a typical classroom door presents a vulnerability in that a hostile intruder could break out the glass of the window and attempt to gain access to the room or extend a weapon into the room.

Virginia Beach, Chesapeake to require athletes to be fully vaccinated or submit to weekly COVID-19 testing

The two largest school divisions in Hampton Roads announced they will require athletes to be fully vaccinated or submit to weekly testing for COVID-19 beginning in November. Virginia Beach and Chesapeake will require it starting Nov. 8, the school districts said. Neighboring Suffolk already is requiring it.

Virginia Governor's High School Voter Registration Challenge starts Tuesday

Central Virginia school districts grapple with bus driver shortage

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - School districts across central Virginia have been grappling with not having enough bus drivers to keep up with routes. This shortage has led one school district to change its school hours. Dinwiddie Middle and High School students will now be dismissed at 2 p.m.

School board considers raises, bonuses for school bus drivers, aides and custodians

At Monday night’s school board work session, Executive Director of Administration and Planning David Graham told school board members that the transportation department is down “25 to 30 bus drivers every day.” He described the double runs that have to be accomplished in order to pick up and drop off the county’s children.

Fairfield fifth graders get hands on science in first field trip in post COVID

LEXINGTON, Va. (WDBJ) - The fifth graders from Fairfield Elementary were pretty happy to be at Jordan's Point Tuesday "We were talking on the bus," said their teacher, Cathy Whitesell. "This is their first field trip since they were in third grade, you know?" They were there for some lessons in science.

Walk to School Week for Waynesboro students starts Monday

WAYNESBORO - Waynesboro Public Schools will be celebrating Walk to School Week starting Monday, Oct. 4. Students, parents, teachers and community volunteers walk to school to emphasize the importance of creating safe routes to school, increasing physical activity among children, concern for the environment and building connections between families, schools and their community, per a press release from the school division.

Some Alexandria parents question school safety without resource officers on campus

Parents of Alexandria Public Schools are calling for improvements to student safety. RELATED: Juvenile shot following fight in Alexandria, police say This comes after a juvenile was shot after school last week. The student suffered non-life-threatening injuries. While not on the agenda Tuesday night, parents showed up to confront members of Alexandria City Council on their way into a board meeting.
