School superintendent: Local schools won't be impacted by state's slashing of equity initiatives

State education officials have begun rolling back statewide equity initiatives aimed at fulfilling Gov. Glenn Youngkin's pledge to stop schools from teaching "inherently divisive concepts." But the rollback won't have any impact on Fauquier County schools, according to Superintendent David Jeck.

Spotsylvania students asking for representation on School Board

One of the more than 50 speakers at the Nov. 15, 2021, Spotsylvania School Board meeting was Lauren Mullikin, a junior at Courtland High School. It was the first meeting after the board voted to remove "sexually explicit" books from school library shelves and the community had lots to say about the issue.

Hopewell school board updates COVID-19 protocols

HOPEWELL, Va. (WRIC) - The Hopewell school board held a vote Friday night to implement new COVID-19 protocols in schools that will begin Monday, March 14. According to a release posted to the school board's website, the change is in response to "recent rapid declines in COVID numbers" as well as a change in guidance from the CDC.

Ryder proposes $22M FY23 budget for Franklin City Public Schools - The Tidewater News

The Franklin City School Board heard a proposal for the school division's fiscal year 2023 budget March 3 that would put total revenue and disbursements at $22.2 million. Jeff Ryder, Franklin City Public Schools' assistant superintendent for finance and federal programs, also presented a separate FY 2023 capital budget for the school system.

Richmond Public Schools again leads the state in school dropouts

RICHMOND, Va (WRIC) - Richmond Public Schools has the worst dropout rate of any public school district in Virginia. According to the state department of education, Richmond has held the unfortunate title and top slot five times in the last decade and had the second-worst dropout rate four times.

Judge denies Fairfax schools option to leave Thomas Jefferson admissions policy in place

A federal judge has denied the request of Fairfax County Public Schools for a stay of his order invalidating the admissions system at prestigious magnet school Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, marking another serious blow for Virginia's largest school system.

After review, Bedford County schools will not remove challenged books from school libraries

After reviewing 11 challenged books found in certain school libraries in the Bedford County Public Schools system, BCPS administrators and book review committees made the decision not to remove any of the challenged titles from school libraries.
