Hanover welcomes students back to school: 'no apprehension'

As parents dropped off children at John M. Gandy Elementary School on Wednesday morning, music teacher Megan Standlick welcomed each student by name. Wednesday marked the second of two "first days" for Hanover County Public Schools students, and the last year that the division will return to school after Labor Day.

Following threat, nearly half of students at Admiral Richard E. Byrd Middle School stay home

Rumors of potential violence at Admiral Richard E. Byrd Middle School in Frederick County led to nearly half of the facility's approximately 1,006 students staying home on Tuesday. The Frederick County Sheriff's Office said in a media release Tuesday afternoon that the threat was not deemed credible, but "out of an abundance of caution, extra resources were deployed for this morning's return to school from the Labor Day weekend."

Hollins University partners with local schools to fight teacher shortage

ROANOKE, Va. - Schools across the country are struggling to close the teacher shortage gap. Last year, there were at least 2,500 unfilled teaching positions statewide, according to the Virginia Department of Education's staffing and vacancy report.

School enrollment on the rise for first time since 2007

Enrollment in Halifax County Public Schools is up this school year. On Aug. 29, 4,655 students headed to school for the start of a new year. By comparison, enrollment was 4,484 on the first day of the 2021-22 school year. On the last day of the 2021-22 school year, the enrollment was 4,598.

As Virginia Beach Public School students return to class, the Superintendent pays a visit to 8 schools

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - About 65,000 students returned to Virginia Beach City Public Schools on Tuesday. Superintendent Dr. Aaron Spence toured eight schools across the city including elementary, middle, and high schools. He started the day at Old Donation School. No Kid Hungry, Balow Urge Parents to Apply for Free School Meals - Loudoun Now

Nonprofit No Kid Hungry Virginia and Virginia Superintendent of Public Instruction Jillian Balow are urging parents to apply for free meals for their children at school under newly expanded eligibility rules this year. This year, a federal waiver allowing all students to receive free meals at school without an application expired, meaning students are once again paying to eat breakfast and lunch at school.
