VSBA Advocate for Education Award

VSBA invites your board to nominate a member for the annual VSBA Advocate for Education Award, to be presented at the VSBA Annual Convention in November. This award was created to recognize school board members who have demonstrated significant and outstanding leadership, commitment, and contribution to public education that has impacted their region, the Commonwealth, and who have actively participated in local, state, and federal advocacy on behalf of their division, VSBA, and public schools.

Richmond schools face staffing shortage after quarter of teachers resigned at end of 2021-2022 school year

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) - Richmond Public Schools are facing a critical teacher shortage six weeks before the start of the school year. According to the RPS School Board, 552 out of 2,156 teachers resigned from the district at the end of the 2021-2022 school year. Currently, the district is still facing 176 vacancies.

Bedford school board narrowly OKs amended resolution supporting teachers, staff

After a split vote last month from the Bedford County School Board on a resolution expressing support for BCPS teachers and staff, which came on the heels of the unanimous approval of a "parental rights" resolution, an altered teacher support resolution passed in a 4-3 vote last week.

Judge dismisses FOIA case against Spotsylvania School Board members

A General District Court judge on Tuesday granted a motion to strike a former Spotsylvania County student's complaint that members of the Spotsylvania School Board violated her rights under Virginia's Freedom of Information Act by not properly voting to enter a closed session at its first meeting this year.

WAYNESBORO, Va. (WHSV) - Waynesboro Public Schools (WPS) will be hosting its 2nd annual Back to School Bash event on July 24 and July 31 at Kate Collins Middle School, 1625 Ivy Street in Waynesboro. Bonuses, raises included in Norfolk Public Schools budget, but teachers 'disheartened' by plan to address pay inequities

The Norfolk Public Schools board has approved raises and bonuses within the latest budget to help recruit and retain staff. However, some of the more senior staff members say that their pay doesn't reflect their experience and the raises don't help them get compensated the way they are supposed to.

Hanover to build elementary school with no gendered bathrooms

The Hanover County Public Schools division will be among the first in Virginia to build a school with no gendered bathrooms. There will be individual toilet rooms in every wing on every floor for second through fifth grades. Each stall has complete privacy, with partitions from the ceiling to the floor with no gaps, according to designers from Crabtree, Rohrbaugh, & Associates.

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Henrico Public Schools are calling on all heroes to help change a child's life. The school division is searching for volunteers to mentor second through twelfth-grade students. "We all deserve a caring individual who we can process life with," Henrico Public Schools K-12 Intervention Specialist Leslie Velez said.
