HHS Chapter Of TSA Cleans Up At State Competition

During the pandemic, a lot of clubs and student organizations at high schools saw a drop in enrollment due to the lack of in-person events and meetings. However, the Technology Student Association chapter at Harrisonburg High School was one of the few that grew.

Hanover School Board considers restriction on student demonstrations

HANOVER, Va. (WRIC) - The Hanover School Board is considering a change to its student code of conduct that could restrict students' First Amendment right to protest. The changes, which were drafted and proposed by the school administration, would introduce a new passage near the end of the code of conduct that reads as follows: Protests and Walkouts Students are entitled to a learning environment free of unnecessary disruption.

Fairfax Co. teachers' union calls for more inclusive virtual learning option | WTOP News

A teachers' union in Fairfax County, Virginia, is urging Superintendent Scott Brabrand and school board members to continue offering a limited virtual school program for vulnerable students and staff. The Fairfax Education Association, which says it represents over 4,000 school system employees, said in a letter last week that plans for the next school year don't "seem to include any full-time virtual option for students who would request this option."

Virginia students walk out to support abortion rights

High school students around Virginia held walkouts Monday in support of abortion access after a leaked draft majority opinion last week indicated the U.S. Supreme Court could overturn Roe v. Wade. At Richmond's Open High School, nearly 200 students walked out Monday afternoon in solidarity with organizers from Generation Ratify Virginia, a youth-led movement that supports certification of the Equal Rights Amendment in the Constitution and advancing gender justice.

Two Henrico County counselors honored as Virginia's best

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) - The Virginia School Counselor Association has named two Henrico County Public Schools counselors Virginia's best of 2022. Christina Tillery of Highland Springs High School was named Virginia Secondary School Counselor of the year and Holly Guelig, a school counselor at Greenwood Elementary School, was named Virginia Elementary School Counselor of the Year.

Summer school gets closer to normal post-pandemic

BRISTOL, Va. - City schools will again offer expanded summer school programming but scale back compared to last year's levels. On Monday the Bristol Virginia School Board unanimously approved the schedule, which has all summer classes beginning June 13. Elementary and middle school sessions are to conclude June 30.
